The 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olalekan Balogun, passed away at 81, just days after marking his second year coronation anniversary. 

His media aide, Dele Ogunsola, confirmed the news Thursday night. Oba Balogun died at the University College Hospital in Ibadan shortly after admission.

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed his passing, praising him as an epitome of royal excellence. The late Olubadan, a former university lecturer and senator, will be buried Friday evening in Ibadan. 

Survived by wives, children, and grandchildren, his passing leaves a notable void in Ibadan’s history and leadership.

Background and Ascension to the Throne

Oba Olalekan Balogun became the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland on March 11, 2022, following the demise of his predecessor, Oba Saliu Adetunji.



Achievements and Legacy

Governor Seyi Makinde described him as an epitome of royal excellence and a great achiever, noting his significant contributions to Ibadanland in just over two years of his reign.

Passing and Condolences

Oba Balogun passed away at the age of 81 at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan after a brief illness. Governor Makinde expressed condolences to his family, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council, and the people of Ibadanland.

Career and Contributions

Prior to his reign as Olubadan, he held various positions including being a former university lecturer, management staff member of Shell British Petroleum, gubernatorial candidate of the defunct Nigerian People’s Party (NPP), former Senator, and a successful businessman.

Last Days and Burial

Oba Balogun’s last official outing was presiding over the Olubadan Advisory Council’s meeting. He will be buried in Ibadan at his Aliiwo ancestral home according to Islamic rites.

Survivors

He is survived by his wives, children, and grandchildren.

Education

The late Olubadan held a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

Last Public Statement 

On his second anniversary on the throne, which coincided with the beginning of Ramadan, he expressed gratitude to God and asked for prayers for the country.

Overall, Oba Olalekan Balogun’s passing marks the end of a chapter in Ibadan’s history, leaving behind a legacy of service and achievement.
