Herbert Wigwe passed away at the age of 58, having been born on August 15, 1966.

He held a degree in Accountancy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as well as an MA in Banking and Finance from the University College of North Wales (now Bangor), and an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of London.

Career path

Wigwe commenced his career at Coopers & Lybrand in Lagos, initially serving as a management consultant before becoming a chartered accountant.

Banking career

He transitioned to Capital Bank and later joined Guaranty Trust Bank, where he ascended through the ranks over a decade, ultimately serving as the executive director in charge of institutional banking.

Chairmanships

Wigwe held several chairmanships, including Access Bank Ghana Limited, Access Investment & Securities Limited, and Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS). Until his passing, he chaired Access Bank (UK) Limited.

Awards and recognitions

In 2016, Wigwe received accolades as the Banker of The Year from The Sun and Vanguard newspapers. He was also recognized by the Boys’ Brigade as the State Patron for Lagos State Council.

He established The HOW Foundation in 2016, demonstrating his commitment to social impact through a non-profit organization.
