Why are foreigners taking over jobs in Nigeria? Youth minister gives reason

Minister of State for Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande, bemoaned the increasing preference for foreign workers by private firms due to the perceived lack of skills among Nigerian youths.

In a statement, he voiced his concern during a visit from the National Youth Leaders Forum, urging the youth to acquire marketable skills. Proposing a “One Youth, Two Skills” campaign, Olawande emphasized the need for empowerment.

Chairman of the National Youth Leaders Forum, Amb. Mohammed Awwal Musa, praised the minister’s initiatives and affirmed the forum’s commitment to collaboration across political lines for youth empowerment.

6 reasons foreigners are taking over jobs in Nigeria:

Skill Gap: The Minister of State for Youth Development highlighted that many Nigerian youths lack the necessary skills demanded by private firms, making them less competitive in the job market.

Employability Issues: Due to the perceived lack of skills, private firms may prefer to hire foreigners who are seen as having the expertise required for the job.

Global Talent Attraction: Foreigners might be attracted to job opportunities in Nigeria due to the global nature of certain industries, leading to increased competition for positions.

Marketability Concerns: The minister emphasized the need for Nigerian youths to acquire skills that make them marketable and employable, suggesting that some may currently lack the qualities sought by employers.

Government Call to Action: The proposed “One Youth, Two Skills” campaign indicates a recognition of the problem and a call for proactive measures to empower Nigerian youths, suggesting a historical lack of such initiatives.

Youth Empowerment Initiatives: While commending the minister’s plans, the Chairman of the National Youth Leaders Forum highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and youth leaders, emphasizing a collective effort to address unemployment challenges.
