Nigerians warned against poisonous plantain chips… here’s what you should know

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) recently issued a warning to residents about the potential dangers of consuming fried plantains, also known as “plantain chips,” that are produced using unhygienic methods.

This caution came after a viral video post surfaced on social media, alleging that a seller had been witnessed adding pieces of polythene into the hot oil used for frying the plantain chips with the intention of hardening them.

In response to the concerns raised on social media, LASCOPA expressed serious apprehension about the health risks associated with this practice. The agency urged consumers to be cautious and vigilant when purchasing plantain chips, in order to avoid exposing themselves to harmful substances or potential food poisoning.

They also assured the public that they are actively investigating the reported incident and are committed to taking appropriate measures to safeguard consumers and hold those responsible for such unsafe practices accountable.

Furthermore, LASCOPA called upon the public to report any similar unscrupulous and illegal practices by sellers of consumable items that could jeopardize the health of consumers. They also provided their contact information for the public to reach out and report any such incidents.

5 things to note while buying plantain chips

Ingredients List

Check the ingredients list to ensure it includes only natural and familiar components. Avoid products with excessive additives, preservatives, or artificial flavorings.

Oil Used for Frying

Consider the type of oil used for frying the plantain chips. Healthier options include oils like sunflower, coconut, or olive oil, while you might want to avoid chips fried in less desirable oils.

Salt Content

Monitor the salt content in the plantain chips. Excessive salt can impact your health negatively, so opt for products with moderate salt levels or those labeled as low-sodium.

Freshness and Crispiness

Inspect the packaging for indicators of freshness, and if possible, check for a production or expiration date. Freshness contributes to the crispiness of the chips, ensuring a more enjoyable snack.

Brand Reputation

Consider purchasing from reputable brands or sources. Read reviews or ask for recommendations to ensure you are getting a high-quality product with good taste and adherence to food safety standards.
