Who is George Ilenikhena, the striker who scored on his Super Eagles debut?
George Ilenikhena could hardly have asked for a better start to his Super Eagles career.
The 20-year-old forward scored in the 45+1 minute against Madagascar on Friday, September 25, 2026, marking his senior Nigeria debut with a goal as the Super Eagles opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
For a player receiving his first senior international call-up only days earlier, it was an immediate introduction to Nigerian football fans.
But Ilenikhena was not an unknown quantity before stepping onto the pitch in Uyo.
Born in Lagos and raised in France, he had already played professional football in France and Belgium, appeared in the UEFA Champions League and scored against Barcelona before moving to Saudi Arabia.
So, who is George Ilenikhena?
Born in Lagos, raised in France
Ilenikhena was born in Lagos on August 16, 2006.
He moved to France with his family when he was three and grew up in Antony, in the Paris region.
His football development therefore took place largely in France, where he joined Antony Football Evolution before moving into the professional game.
His progress eventually took him to Amiens, where his emergence as a goalscorer began to attract wider attention.
The young striker who made history at Amiens
Ilenikhena joined Amiens in 2021 and progressed through the club’s youth system.
He broke into the senior side while still very young and made his professional debut in the French Cup in November 2022.
He subsequently made his Ligue 2 debut and scored against Bordeaux just three days later.
That goal placed his name in the league’s record books.
At 16 years and 150 days, Ilenikhena became the youngest goalscorer in Ligue 2 history at the time.
His early breakthrough showed why clubs were beginning to monitor his development.
Belgium and his first taste of Champions League football
In 2023, Ilenikhena moved from Amiens to Royal Antwerp in Belgium.
The transfer gave him his first experience of Champions League football.
At Antwerp, he continued developing as a young forward and scored 14 goals in 50 appearances across competitions.
One of the defining moments of that spell came against Barcelona in the Champions League.
Ilenikhena scored Antwerp’s winning goal in a 3-2 victory over the Spanish giants in December 2023.

Monaco came next
His performances in Belgium earned him a move to AS Monaco in 2024.
Monaco confirmed that Ilenikhena made 51 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing two assists before his departure in February 2026.
His Monaco spell also produced another Champions League moment against Barcelona.
He scored in Monaco’s 2-1 victory over the Catalan club, meaning he had found the net against Barcelona for two different clubs in the competition. CAF highlighted that achievement when naming him among the young players to watch in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
Why did Ilenikhena choose Nigeria?
Although Ilenikhena grew up in France and represented the country at youth level, his place of birth meant he was eligible to represent Nigeria.
The decision became a major part of his international story when Eric Chelle handed him his first senior Super Eagles call-up for the September 2026 AFCON qualifiers.
CAF listed Ilenikhena alongside Arthur Okonkwo and Isaac James as one of three players receiving their first senior Nigeria call-ups for the matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
His arrival also came at a time when Nigeria needed more attacking options following Victor Osimhen’s absence from the opening qualifiers.
A new chapter at Al-Ittihad
Ilenikhena left Monaco for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad in February 2026.
The Saudi club confirmed that he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract.
The move has provided another stage for the forward to develop, and he began the 2026/27 season with a strong scoring return.
The Saudi Pro League’s official player profile lists four goals and two assists for Ilenikhena in six league appearances this season.
That form helped put him firmly into the conversation for a place in Chelle’s squad.
Premium Times reported before the Madagascar game that Ilenikhena had scored six goals and provided two assists in nine appearances across competitions for Al-Ittihad.
Then came the Super Eagles debut
Ilenikhena’s first senior Nigeria appearance came against Madagascar in Uyo.
Chelle named him in the starting lineup, handing the 20-year-old his long-awaited international debut.
And he did not have to wait long to make his mark.
With Nigeria trailing Madagascar, Ilenikhena scored in the 45+1 minute, bringing the Super Eagles level before the interval.
For a player making his first appearance for the country at senior level, the timing could hardly have been more significant.
