SPOTLIGHT: How Kolo is grooming future graphics designers through GraphicsAbode Tournament

In Minna, Niger State capital, Abdullahi Kolo Muhammad, a seasoned graphic designer and the CEO of AB-Unique Graphics Designs has been on a mission to transform the lives of aspiring graphic designers through his brainchild, the GraphicsAbode Tournament.

In this report, Crispng will spotlight the story of Kolo, what inspired him, and the success and challenges he has faced in the process.

With over a decade of experience, Abdullahi’s passion for the graphic design profession goes beyond half success. He emphasizes, “I have trained so many youths irrespective of gender in the profession because the younger generation is the key to the future.”

The GraphicsAbode Tournament, launched in January 2023, is a platform designed to guide and propel young talents onto the right path in the graphic design profession. Abdullahi shares, “It’s about bringing them to the limelight and boosting the entire profession.”

Despite facing initial challenges, including a lack of recognition for graphic designers in his environment, Abdullahi’s determination to make a difference fueled the birth of the tournament. He states, “I found myself in an environment where people don’t regard graphic designers. This fueled the idea of creating a platform to educate and showcase the potential in this field.”

The impact of the GraphicsAbode Tournament has been tangible. Abdullahi proudly notes, “We’ve provided cash prizes, complete systems, and invaluable networking opportunities to the winners, helping them overcome obstacles and progress in their careers.”

However, the journey hasn’t been without hurdles. Funding remains a major challenge, and Abdullahi admits, “It’s not easy to get donors, but the tournament almost faced an untimely end until a donor came into the picture and rescued the mission.”

Undeterred by the lack of support from government agencies, Abdullahi envisions a future where graphic design is recognized as a professional course at the university level. He remarks, “My policy is to make Graphic Design one of the professional courses that can be taught even at the University level.”

Looking ahead, Abdullahi encourages organizations and individuals to contribute to the GraphicsAbode Tournament. “Support can come in the form of laptops, complete systems, or funds to enable us to run smoothly,” he appeals.

Abdullahi draws inspiration from his humble beginnings, emphasizing, “Where I started from and the journey so far in life is my biggest inspiration.” His unwavering faith in overcoming obstacles is reflected in his belief, “With God Almighty and the mindset I have, I shall overcome any fears and obstacles.”
