Here’s how to avoid being killed by wild animals
Remain calm and avoid sudden movements
When encountering a wild animal, such as a bear or a big cat, it’s important to stay calm and avoid sudden movements that may startle or provoke the animal.
Make yourself appear larger
If facing a predator like a mountain lion or wolf, raise your arms or hold a jacket above your head to make yourself appear larger. This may intimidate the animal and make it think twice before attacking.
Back away slowly
When facing a wild animal, it’s crucial not to turn your back and run as this may trigger a chase response. Instead, back away slowly while keeping an eye on the animal.
Do not approach or feed wild animals
It’s essential to respect the natural habitat of wild animals and not approach them for any reason. Feeding them can also lead to dependency and aggression.
Carry bear spray or other deterrents
If you are in an area known for bear or cougar activity, carrying bear spray or other deterrents can help you defend yourself if necessary.
Keep food stored safely
When camping or hiking in bear country, keep your food stored in bear-proof containers or hang it high in a tree away from your campsite to avoid attracting bears to your location.
Stay informed about local wildlife
Different regions have different wildlife, so it’s important to research and be aware of the potential animals you may encounter in the area you are visiting. Understanding their behavior can help you avoid dangerous situations.
Remember, the best way to avoid conflicts with wild animals is to respect their space, keep a safe distance, and be prepared with knowledge and tools to protect yourself if needed.
