Grass to grace series (17): From having no TV to soccer star, Samuel Chukwueze’s inspiring journey

From a young age, Samuel Chukwueze was already bewitching others with his enchanting football skills.

He was captivated by Jay-Jay Okocha, his football idol, and would go to great lengths just to catch a glimpse of his hero in action.

Despite not having a television at home, Chukwueze would make his way to the local viewing center, peeping through the window to watch Nigeria play. His passion for the game and his admiration for Okocha were undeniable.

Born in Ghana on May 22, 1999, Chukwueze was raised in a Christian family with a younger brother and sister. He attended Government College Umuahia, Abia Stare and Evangel Secondary School before embarking on his football journey.

“Facing obstacles from his own mother, who believed football would distract him from his studies, Chukwueze’s determination never wavered,” the narrator stated.

“Even when his family burned his boots and training gear, trying to deter him, Chukwueze couldn’t stay away from the game he loved,” Chukwueze said.

One fateful morning, Chukwueze’s mother surprised him by encouraging him to attend a player selection screening in Portugal, a complete reversal from her previous disapproval. With his mother’s newfound support, Chukwueze seized the opportunity that presented itself.

“The person who pushed me away from football was the one who pushed me to that screening. She said God had told her, ‘You must allow this boy to play.’ I’m so glad for that,” Chukwueze reflected on his mother’s change of heart.

This newfound support ignited a fire within Chukwueze, propelling him to showcase his talent on the world stage. Impressing the selectors, he earned a spot to represent Nigeria in the tournament in Portugal.

From this point on, Chukwueze’s rise from humble beginnings began. Catching the attention of scouts, he eventually signed for Villarreal, a Spanish club, leaving behind the academies where he started his football journey.
