2027 Elections: 7 Key Things Nigerians Should Take Note Of Before Voting
With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections approaching, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned voters about fake announcements, including fabricated audio and videos claiming that the polls have been postponed. Beyond the warning, several important dates, requirements and developments could affect how Nigerians prepare for the elections.
The warning comes as political activities gather momentum ahead of the next general elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, said artificial intelligence could be used to create misleading election announcements and confuse voters, particularly shortly before polling day.
Speaking at the National Summit on Electoral Information Integrity in Abuja on Monday, November 2, Amupitan said the commission was developing mechanisms to respond quickly to election-related misinformation.
Here are seven important things Nigerians should take note of ahead of the 2027 elections.
1. Presidential election holds on January 16, 2027
One of the most important dates Nigerians should remember is January 16, 2027.
According to INEC’s revised timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027.
The governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow on February 6, 2027.
The dates were moved forward following changes to the electoral framework. INEC has maintained that it will conduct the elections according to the published timetable.
2. INEC has warned against fake postponement announcements
Nigerians should be careful about election-related messages circulating on WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok and other social media platforms.
INEC has warned that individuals could use AI-generated videos and audio recordings to impersonate officials and announce a false postponement of voting.
Such announcements could prevent registered voters from going to their polling units on election day.
The commission says it is strengthening its response mechanisms and working with social media companies to address manipulated content.
Voters should confirm important announcements through INEC’s official communication channels before acting on them or sharing them.
3. Your PVC remains important
Another issue voters should not overlook is their Permanent Voter Card (PVC).
Although INEC has concluded its Continuous Voter Registration exercise for the 2027 elections, registered voters still need to ensure they have their cards and know where to collect them.
The commission has also carried out voter register displays and PVC distribution exercises across the country.
Nigerians who have registered should contact their local INEC offices for guidance if they have not collected their cards.
4. Check your name on the voter register
Having registered previously does not mean voters should ignore their details on INEC’s register.
The commission published its preliminary voter register online, allowing Nigerians to check their names and other registration information.
Voters should confirm that their names, photographs and polling unit details are correct.
INEC has scheduled December 15, 2026, for the publication of the final register of voters.

5. Political campaigns have official deadlines
Political parties and candidates are expected to observe the campaign timetable released by INEC.
Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to end on January 14, 2027, two days before voting.
For the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, campaigns will end on February 4, 2027.
The deadlines are important because political parties are not permitted to continue public campaigns beyond the period prescribed by law.
6. Election security remains an important issue
Security arrangements will also be important as Nigerians prepare to vote.
INEC has said it is working with security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, to protect voters, electoral officials and election materials.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has begun a training programme targeting 10,000 officers ahead of the elections.
The programme is expected to cover crowd control, conflict prevention, human rights and responses to election-related incidents.

7. Know where to get verified election information
With political discussions increasing online, Nigerians should be cautious about unverified claims concerning candidates, voting procedures, election dates and results.
INEC has specifically warned that manipulated content could make it difficult for voters to distinguish genuine announcements from fabricated ones.
The commission is also engaging social media platforms to improve the handling of misleading election information.
Voters should rely on official INEC announcements and credible news organisations rather than forwarded messages or unidentified social media accounts.
As the 2027 elections approach, knowing the timetable, checking registration details and confirming information before sharing it will help Nigerians prepare for the polls.
