We won’t implement community policing until it reflects our wish, South East govs tell IGP

South East governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have rejected the implementation of community policing programme of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, in the region over its composition.

This was consequent upon a meeting by the South East Governors Forum in Enugu State on Sunday.

At the meeting, which also had in attendance leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo, the governors, in a communique read by chairman of the forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, accused the IGP of breaching his earlier agreement with them on the composition of community policing during the South East Security Summit held in February.

The communique read: “On the community policing, the recent communication from the IGP to our governors on community policing composition is not in keeping with the agreement we reached with him during his last visit to the South East.

“We cannot begin implementation of it until the programme reflects our earlier agreement and the IGP to revert to our initial agreement reached at Enugu.”

The governors went on to direct states’ Houses of Assembly in the zone to enact security laws in line with the South East Joint Security programme.

The IGP had reportedly agreed with the zone that the governors would be involved in the recruitment of personnel for the community policing during the said summit.
