Stampede claims 7 lives in Lagos during Nigeria Customs Service rice sale – see how to avoid being a victim
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed the passing of one of its members, Comfort Adebanjo, along with six others who tragically lost their lives while attempting to purchase seized rice being sold by the Nigeria Customs Service.
The ruling party conveyed this message through an obituary message released on Saturday to mourn the deceased party member and other affected Nigerians.
In response to public outcry over the escalating cost of living, the Customs Service announced plans to directly distribute seized food items to citizens. This initiative aims to address food security challenges and rising food prices.

Tips to avoid being a victim of a stampede:
Stay calm and aware: Maintain composure and be aware of your surroundings. Panicking can exacerbate the situation and increase the risk of injury.
Choose off-peak times: If possible, avoid crowded events during peak hours when the risk of stampedes is higher. Opt for attending events during less crowded times.
Plan an exit strategy: Before entering crowded areas or events, familiarize yourself with the layout and identify multiple exit routes. Having an exit strategy can help you quickly leave if the situation becomes chaotic.
Stay near exits: Position yourself close to exits or areas with easy access to exits. This allows for a quicker escape in case of an emergency.
Avoid bottlenecks: Steer clear of narrow passages, bottlenecks, or areas with limited space. These areas are more prone to congestion and can escalate into stampedes.
Keep moving: If you find yourself in a crowd, try to keep moving steadily with the flow of people. Sudden stops or changes in direction can lead to collisions and falls.
Stay to the side: Rather than being in the middle of a crowd, try to stay towards the edges or sides of a crowd. This gives you more space and options to maneuver.
Communicate with others: If you sense danger or notice a potential hazard, communicate calmly with those around you. Alerting others can help prevent panic and mitigate the risk of a stampede.
Travel light: Avoid carrying bulky bags or items that can hinder your movement. Traveling light allows you to move more freely and swiftly if necessary.
Follow instructions: If authorities or event organizers provide instructions or guidance during crowded events, follow them promptly and cooperatively. Their directions are aimed at ensuring everyone’s safety.
