The Mandela National Stadium in Kampala will be the scene of high drama this Monday evening as South Africa and Guinea meet in a Group C encounter that could make or break their 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship campaigns. Kick-off is set for 17:00 local time, and for both teams, the stakes could hardly be higher.
In tournament football, there are matches you want to win and matches you must win — this falls firmly into the latter category. South Africa enter the clash with just a single point from their opening 1-1 draw against Algeria. Guinea, meanwhile, are licking their wounds after a bruising 3-0 defeat to hosts Uganda. With Uganda and Algeria sitting comfortably at the top of the group, Monday’s showdown has all the hallmarks of a do-or-die contest.
Ntseki’s Quest to Turn Promise into Points
For Bafana Bafana head coach Molefi Ntseki, the mission is clear — build on a solid start and turn performance into results. While his side showed grit and discipline in their opener, the coach knows that points, not plaudits, will keep their qualification hopes alive.
“The first game served as a real icebreaker,” Ntseki reflected. “We matched a strong opponent in Algeria, but now we must surpass ourselves in the next game.”
Ntseki has studied Guinea’s set-piece routines and attacking tendencies, singling out their number 7 and number 10 as potential troublemakers. His challenge will be balancing defensive discipline with the attacking ambition needed to secure victory.
Camara’s Defiant Response to Opening Loss
Guinea boss Souleymane Camara isn’t letting the heavy defeat to Uganda dent his optimism. Instead, he’s framing Monday’s match as an opportunity for redemption.
“I believe tomorrow’s game is there to be won,” Camara declared confidently. “We are prepared and motivated to face the expected difficulties.”
While some tactical tweaks are expected, Camara insists he won’t abandon his team’s football identity. For the Syli Nationale, the key will be tightening up at the back without blunting their attacking edge.
Leaders Under the Spotlight
The leadership of South Africa captain Keagan Dolly could prove pivotal. Determined to turn lessons from the Algeria game into three points, Dolly is focusing on concentration and creating more goal-scoring chances.
On the Guinea side, the return of creative midfielder Mahamed Madani Diarra from injury offers a spark. His vision and link-up play will be central to unlocking South Africa’s defence, especially if the game turns into a tactical chess match.
Current Standings and the Harsh Reality
The group table makes for uneasy reading. South Africa sit bottom with a single point, while Guinea are only above them on goal difference. Uganda and Algeria lead the charge, while Niger are yet to make an impact. Defeat for either side on Monday would likely spell the end of their CHAN journey.
What to Expect
With so much on the line, this match promises a blend of caution and urgency. South Africa will look to control possession, using Dolly’s leadership and pace in wide areas to stretch Guinea’s back line. Guinea, meanwhile, will hope Diarra can orchestrate quick breaks and exploit any lapses in concentration from Ntseki’s men.
Both coaches understand that fine margins could decide the contest — a single defensive error or a moment of brilliance in front of goal may be enough to tilt the balance.
The Bottom Line
Only victory will suffice for either side if they are to keep their CHAN dreams alive. Expect a tense, fiercely contested battle under the Kampala evening sky, with two teams fighting not just for points, but for survival in the competition.
Kick-off: Monday, 11 August 2025 — 17:00 (local time)
Venue: Mandela National Stadium, Kampala
Key Battles to Watch
1. Keagan Dolly vs Guinea’s Full-Backs
South Africa’s captain will be tasked with stretching Guinea’s defensive shape. His ability to drift inside, link play, and deliver precise crosses will put Guinea’s full-backs under constant pressure. If Dolly finds space in advanced areas, Bafana Bafana’s attack could flourish.
2. Mahamed Madani Diarra vs South Africa’s Midfield Screen
Diarra’s creativity and composure on the ball will be Guinea’s main weapon. South Africa’s holding midfielders must cut off his supply lines and prevent him from threading passes into dangerous areas. Failure to contain him could see Guinea carve out the game’s best chances.
3. South Africa’s Centre-Backs vs Guinea’s Direct Runs
Ntseki has warned about Guinea’s number 7 and 10, who excel at breaking defensive lines with sharp movement. South Africa’s central defence will need to maintain concentration, especially during transitions, where Guinea’s pace could be lethal.
Tactical Outlook
-
South Africa: Likely to prioritise structured possession and controlled build-up, with overlapping full-backs providing width. Expect them to press high early in the game to test Guinea’s composure after their heavy defeat.
-
Guinea: Will look for quick counters and exploit the spaces left behind when South Africa push forward. Their set-pieces could also be a key avenue for goals given their physical presence.
Prediction
This is a classic high-pressure group-stage showdown — cagey in the early stages, with both sides wary of making costly mistakes. South Africa’s organisation and Dolly’s leadership could give them a slight edge, but Guinea’s attacking flair means a draw remains possible if they execute their counterattacks well.
Predicted Score: South Africa 2–1 Guinea
Potential Matchwinner: Keagan Dolly (South Africa)
