Manchester United Come From 2-0 Down to End Nine-Game Winless Streak

Manchester United ended their nine-game winless run with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, November 3. Matheus Cunha scored twice as Michael Carrick’s side overturned a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford.

United looked set for another disappointing night after Roma took control early in the first half.

Matias Soule opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The forward finished a move created by Rodrigo Mora to give the visitors an early advantage.

Roma doubled their lead six minutes later through Donyell Malen. The Dutch striker converted a penalty after Ayden Heaven handled the ball inside the area.

The two goals put United under pressure. The home side struggled to respond before the break, while sections of the crowd expressed their frustration.

However, the hosts returned with greater urgency after half-time.

Bruno Fernandes starts Manchester United’s comeback

United reduced the deficit in the 58th minute when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty.

The captain initially saw his effort saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vasquez. However, the referee ordered a retake after Roma players encroached into the penalty area.

Fernandes made no mistake with his second attempt, giving United a route back into the match.

The hosts continued to push for an equaliser. Bryan Mbeumo came close, but his effort struck both posts before Roma managed to clear the danger.

United eventually found their second goal through Cunha in the 83rd minute.

A defensive mistake from Roma allowed the Brazilian forward to level the score. His finish brought Old Trafford back to life and shifted the pressure onto the visitors.

Cunha completes the turnaround

Cunha completed United’s comeback three minutes later.

The forward found space and fired past Vasquez from a tight angle to put the hosts ahead for the first time.

His two goals turned a difficult evening into a memorable Champions League victory.

However, the match ended on a tense note for the Brazilian. He received a second yellow card in stoppage time following a late challenge on Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi.

United had to protect their narrow advantage with 10 players. They held on until the final whistle to secure all three points.

What the victory means for Manchester United

The result ended a nine-match winless run across all competitions. United had recorded three draws and six defeats during that period.

Their previous victory came against Sabah in the Champions League’s opening matchday in September. The win over Roma was also their first in 54 days.

The result gives Carrick some relief after a difficult spell. It also provides United with an opportunity to rebuild confidence.

However, one comeback victory does not erase the problems behind their recent run. United must now show that they can maintain the same intensity in their next matches.

For now, the comeback against Roma gives the club a much-needed result and ends a difficult chapter.
