 Revealed: How Oshoala won record 6th CAF Women’s player of the year

The Barcelona player maintained her dominance in African women’s football as she was named the 2023 CAF Women’s Player of the Year at the ceremony held in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

Asisat Oshoala won the award in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022 and after defeating Barbara Banda of Zambia and Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa she just bagged her sixth to help solidify her name the more in the continent’s women’s football.



The 29-year-old striker was Barcelona feminine’s top scorer last season, scoring 27 goals across all competitions as the Spanish giants clinched a domestic double.

Her goals helped Barcelona feminine to get to champions league final against Lyon in Turin, and also retain their Primera Division championship.

In addition, Oshoala became the first player from Africa to score a goal in three women’s World Cup. The Super Falcons striker achieved the feat when she scored the winning goal in Nigeria’s win over Australia in the 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted by New Zealand and Australia as Nigeria reached the round of 16 of the biggest competition in women’s football.

“Agha Baller” (as she is fondly called by fans) inscribed her name in Spanish football history as her 21 goals league last season made her the first female player to win the title of highest goalscorer in the Spanish top division.

Oshoala is also now the first to win the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award six times and was also nominated for this year’s Ballon d’Or award where she finished 20th in the ranking.
