Rape, Domestic Violence: 6,664 Human Rights Cases Await Resolution in Bauchi
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says 6,664 human rights complaints remain pending in Bauchi State. The cases include rape, gender-based violence and domestic abuse, among other alleged violations.
The commission disclosed that it handled 9,969 complaints between January and October 2026.
Its Bauchi State Coordinator, Mrs Yachit Dala, revealed the figures during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Wednesday.
According to Dala, the commission resolved 3,305 cases during the period, while the remaining 6,664 are still pending.
The complaints cover several forms of alleged abuse and violations of individual rights.
Rape, gender-based violence among reported cases
Dala identified gender-based violence, rape, sexual violence and domestic violence among the complaints received by the commission.
Other cases involved mistreatment, abandonment of parental responsibilities, and violations of civil and political rights.
She explained that the commission receives, assesses and registers complaints before taking steps towards their resolution.
The NHRC also investigates allegations and may establish special panels or tribunals to hear petitions and review testimonies.
Dala added that the commission provides support to victims and makes recommendations to help resolve disputes.
NHRC identifies challenges facing its operations
The Bauchi coordinator identified inadequate funding, low public awareness and illiteracy as major challenges affecting the commission’s work.
These difficulties could limit public access to its services and efforts to address reported abuses.
She urged residents to report cases of human rights violations to the commission.
Dala also called on youth and women’s groups to lead campaigns against human rights abuses.
The figures highlight the volume of complaints handled by the commission in Bauchi within 10 months. However, the NHRC’s disclosure does not specify how many of the pending cases involve each category of abuse or when they may be resolved.
