Meet Aliko Dangote’s daughters running key parts of his business empire
The daughters of Nigerian billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote are taking on increasingly important responsibilities across the business empire their father built, with each of the three sisters occupying senior positions in different parts of the conglomerate.
Halima, Mariya and Fatima Dangote have responsibilities spanning the family’s cement, food, oil and gas, fertiliser and investment operations.
The sisters recently attracted attention after Halima explained why they have maintained a relatively low public profile despite growing up in one of Nigeria’s wealthiest families.
Speaking in a Bloombecrg interview, Halima said she and her sisters preferred to let their work speak for them rather than make their wealth or lifestyles the centre of public attention.
“We are not spoilt,” Halima said, explaining that their experience of wealth was different from what some people might expect.
The three sisters now occupy senior positions within Dangote Industries Limited, making their careers increasingly important to the future of one of Africa’s largest business groups.
Here is what to know about the Dangote sisters.
1. Halima Dangote
At 42, Halima Dangote is the middle daughter of Aliko Dangote and one of the most prominent members of the next generation of the family business.
She currently serves as Group Executive Director of Dangote Family Office and International Offices, with responsibilities connected to the family office’s operations in Dubai and London.
The family office is being developed as an investment and wealth-management hub for the Dangote family and its businesses. Halima has been overseeing the process, with plans for the office to increase its operations from 2027.
Halima has also held several positions across the Dangote Group. She previously served as Executive Director of Dangote Flour Mills, where she led the turnaround of the company before its sale.
She also previously served as Executive Director of NASCON and remains a Non-Executive Director of the company.
Her professional career began at KPMG, where she worked as an analyst. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from American Intercontinental University in London and an MBA from Webster Business School.
Halima is married with children and is also a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation. She serves as Board President of The Africa Center in New York and is a board member of Endeavour Nigeria.
Her recent comments about the sisters’ upbringing offer an insight into why she and her siblings have generally kept their personal lives away from the spotlight.
2. Mariya Dangote
Mariya Dangote, 47, is the eldest of the three sisters and oversees commercial operations covering Dangote’s cement and food businesses.
She serves as Group Executive Director, Commercial Operations – Cement and Foods Businesses at Dangote Industries Limited.
In the role, Mariya provides commercial leadership across the group’s cement and food operations. She is also a Non-Executive Director of Dangote Cement and Dangote Sugar Refinery.
Her career within the group has included strategy and risk-management responsibilities.
Mariya was previously a Group Strategy Lead at Dangote Industries Limited before moving to Dangote Sugar Refinery in 2019. She later became Director of Strategy and Business Integration and Support.
She holds a law degree from Bayero University, Kano, and an MBA from Coventry University in the United Kingdom.
Mariya also serves on the boards of Dangote-Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited, Dangote Cement and the Al-Ummah Development Foundation.
Her position puts her directly in charge of commercial strategy in two of the group’s major business areas — cement and food — as the company continues to expand its operations.
3. Fatima Dangote
Fatima Dangote, 40, is the youngest of the three sisters and holds one of the group’s most expansive commercial responsibilities.
She serves as Group Executive Director, Commercial Operations – Oil & Gas, WAEP and Fertiliser at Dangote Industries Limited.
Her responsibilities cover commercial operations in some of the group’s biggest recent investments, including the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, Dangote Fertiliser and West Africa Exploration and Production.
Fatima has previously served as Executive Director, Commercial at NASCON Allied Industries. She has also worked in Dangote Industries Limited’s strategy unit and as an executive assistant to the Group Executive Director for Business Development and Portfolio Management.
She trained as a lawyer and is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association. She holds a law degree from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom and has attended executive programmes at Columbia University, the Wharton School and the University of Cambridge.
Fatima is married with children and is actively involved in the work of the Aliko Dangote Foundation.
Before taking on her current corporate responsibilities, she also ran an independent confectionery business and a real estate company.
The sisters’ growing role in the Dangote empire
The responsibilities held by Halima, Mariya and Fatima show how different parts of the Dangote Group are increasingly being placed under the leadership of the next generation.
The group’s current executive profile identifies Halima with the family office and international offices, Mariya with cement and food operations, and Fatima with oil and gas, upstream exploration and fertiliser.
Their roles have also become more significant as Aliko Dangote considers the long-term future of the conglomerate.
In a recent interview, Dangote said he could see one of his three daughters eventually taking charge of the group.
For now, however, the sisters are building their own records within different parts of the business.
Halima’s explanation of their approach is straightforward: rather than making their wealth the focus, she and her sisters want their professional achievements to speak for them.
And with each sister now responsible for a significant part of the Dangote business empire, their work is already becoming an important part of the group’s next chapter.
