Grass to grace series (4): Burna Boy, the Port Harcourt ‘local champion’ now an African giant 

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, was born on July 2, 1991, in Ahoada, Rivers State, Nigeria. Growing up in a Yoruba family of Bose Ogulu and Samuel Ogulu, Burna Boy’s roots traced back to West Africa. His early years were spent in Ahoada before his family settled in Lagos, where his journey to musical stardom began.

From a young age, Burna Boy’s passion for music set him apart from his peers. Throughout his childhood in Lagos, he displayed a profound love for singing and a deep connection to the art form. This early obsession with music laid the foundation for his exceptional talent and future success.

Nurturing the flame

Despite facing the challenges of navigating education, Burna Boy’s journey was shaped by perseverance and a burning desire to pursue his musical aspirations. He attended Montessori Primary School in Port Harcourt and later Corona Secondary School in Lagos. It was at the age of 10 that his musical journey intensified when he received the gift of “FruityLoops,” a music production software, sparking his foray into production. With an old computer, Burna Boy crafted his own melodies, showcasing a remarkable talent at such a tender age.

While pursuing higher education in London, Burna Boy encountered personal and legal obstacles. Despite dropping out of university in his second year, he returned to Nigeria with renewed determination, ready to embrace his true calling in music. This marked the turning point in his life, propelling him towards a career that would redefine the Nigerian music scene.

Today, Burna Boy reigns supreme as one of Nigeria’s top artists, carving a distinct path with his unique musical style. His extraordinary talent and unwavering commitment have earned him the title “African Giant.” He seamlessly blends Afrobeat, reggae, and dancehall influences with thought-provoking lyrics, delivering powerful messages through his music.

Burna Boy’s parents, Mr. Samuel Ogulu and Bose Ogulu, played integral roles in his journey. Samuel Ogulu provided a supportive upper-class background and nurtured his son’s education. Bose Ogulu, with a Master’s degree in Translation, manages Burna Boy’s career and is renowned for her iconic award acceptance speeches.

Fluent in multiple languages, she brings a vast cultural perspective to Burna Boy’s artistic endeavors, having worked with esteemed organizations.
