Fulton DA denies wrongdoing in Trump case amid relationship disclosure

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has acknowledged her personal relationship with lead prosecutor Nathan Wade but firmly denies any wrongdoing or conflicts of interest that would warrant their removal from the election interference case involving former President Donald Trump.

In response to a motion seeking their dismissal from the Georgia criminal case, Willis filed a response on Friday. She argued that the motion is merely an attempt to generate unnecessary media attention and invade the personal lives of the prosecution team, rather than a genuine concern for justice. Willis described it as a “ticket to the circus” rather than a genuine legal proceeding.

Furthermore, Willis stated that she, Wade, and the Fulton County District Attorney’s office have no financial or personal conflicts of interest that would disqualify them from the case. She emphasized that the defendants have not provided any evidence to support their claim of an actual conflict of interest, nor have they accused the prosecutors of being driven by personal or financial motivations.

According to Wade’s affidavit, he and Willis have not shared any money and he has no financial stake in the outcome of the trial. Additionally, Willis pointed out that Wade’s payment of approximately $650,000 is reasonable considering the extensive hours required to prosecute a high-profile case in the Atlanta area.

The disclosure of the relationship between Willis and Wade occurred during Wade’s divorce proceedings when his wife presented credit card statements showing payments for airline tickets for Willis. However, Willis affirmed that she has no plans to step down from the case, especially since finding another Georgia prosecutor willing to take on such a high-profile case might prove challenging.

“This is not an example of zealous advocacy, nor is it a good faith effort to develop a record on a disputed legal issue — it is a ticket to the circus.”

Trump and his co-defendants “have done nothing to establish an actual conflict of interest, nor have they shown that, in the handling of the case, District Attorney Willis or Special Prosecutor Wade have acted out of any personal or financial motivation,” Willis said in her filing.
