Dana Air, Cally Air… aircrafts that skidded off runway recently in Nigeria

On Tuesday morning, Dana Air flight 5N BKI skidded off the runway during landing at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The airline promptly confirmed the incident in a statement, expressing regret and clarifying that the flight from Abuja encountered the mishap while landing.

Thankfully, all 83 passengers and crew safely disembarked without injuries, prompting gratitude from the airline. Dana Air immediately notified the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and reassured the public of its safety commitment.

Appreciation was extended to airport authorities and crew for their swift response, with apologies to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused. This incident echoed a similar event in January 2018 when another Dana Air flight, 5N-DEV, grazed a fence at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, with no injuries reported.

Cally Air

On 12 November 2023, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, temporarily closed after an Aero Cally Boeing 737-300 skidded off the taxiway, its nose gear stuck in soft ground.

“Aero Cally” stems from a deal between Cross River State Government and Aero Contractors. The aircraft, registered 5N-BYQ, is 24 years old and was delivered in 1999. It flew from Lagos to Abuja as flight N2119.

With only one runway and adjoining taxiway, NAIA faces delays due to the stuck aircraft. Amateur videos depict efforts by airport staff to move it to the apron, affecting other take-offs and landings.
