What the graduate software engineer role requires
The official vacancy listing asks for strong school and university results, a computing or other STEM degree with programming courses, Linux experience and professional English. Applicants should be able to deliver code in a listed language, such as Python or Rust, and show personal software projects beyond their coursework.
The application asks about Linux, a personal project and leadership during education. Prepare concrete evidence of what you built and contributed, with results that another engineer can understand.
Check work rights and travel before applying
Canonical’s candidate FAQ says employees and contractors need the legal right to work in the country where they will be based. Visa sponsorship is unavailable in most cases, so applicants without existing work rights should tell the hiring team early.
The type of contract depends on the role and location and is discussed during the Talent interview. The FAQ describes full-time hours of 9am–6pm in the employee’s time zone, including an hour for lunch, with flexibility to be discussed during recruitment.
Its remote working policy explains that teams are organised around time-zone overlap. Colleagues also meet at company-funded events around the world. Remote work therefore includes scheduled collaboration and international gatherings, alongside work at home.
The application asks candidates to confirm availability for two to four events a year, lasting one to two weeks. Raise travel restrictions or disability-related accommodation needs during hiring, as the form advises.
Prepare for assessments and several interviews
The published hiring process starts with a specialist review. Successful applicants receive a dashboard and assessment plan.
A written interview covers academic and professional achievements. Canonical says submissions are reviewed anonymously by domain experts. A cognitive assessment takes about 30–45 minutes, while a role-specific technical assessment may also be required.
The interview stages then explore technical skills, career motivations and team fit before an offer. Across roles from graduate to vice-president, Canonical gives an average of around three months from application to offer. Treat that as a company-wide average, rather than a deadline for your application.
The candidate FAQ also requires candidates to supply their own work and prohibits AI assistance during hiring. Write your application and assessment responses yourself, and follow the instructions in any invitation.
What development support is described
Canonical’s early careers programme describes a progression framework running from Graduate through Associate to Prof I, with feedback and promotion cycles. It distinguishes recent undergraduates entering at Graduate level from people considered for Associate positions, including some recent master’s graduates.
The programme includes an in-person induction, a regional colleague providing support before joining, and mentoring from experienced staff. Canonical also states an annual US$2,000 learning budget, which can support professional and technical development. That is a development allowance, separate from salary.

What we don’t know yet
The advert gives no salary range or closing date. The eventual contract and pay offer depend on the applicant’s circumstances and the employer’s decision.
The form also contains a general note about applicants without a degree, alongside the explicit 2025–2026 first-degree requirement for this fast-track route. Their eligibility for this particular vacancy needs clarification from Canonical; the note should not be treated as confirmed eligibility for the graduate route.
Before you submit
Check that your graduation year, project evidence and availability agree across the form and CV. Canonical’s hiring process limits applications to the same job to once in 180 days, and to four different jobs within that period.
