Why Canada Increased Passport Fees

The Canadian government attributed the changes to inflation and the rising cost of delivering passport services.

The adjustment is also linked to the country’s Service Fees Act, which provides for annual reviews and adjustments to service charges.

This means applicants could face further increases in subsequent years as the government continues to review the cost of providing passport and travel document services.

The latest changes affect people applying for Canadian travel documents, including citizens who need to renew expired passports or obtain new ones.

When Do the New Canadian Passport Fees Apply?

The revised charges apply to applications received by the government on or after March 31, 2026.

For applications submitted by post, the date the government receives the documents determines the applicable fee, not the date the applicant sends them.

Applicants who mailed their forms before March 31 but whose applications arrived after the deadline may be required to pay the difference between the old and new charges.

People planning to apply for or renew a Canadian passport should take note of the revised fees and check the applicable requirements before submitting their documents.
