₦50,000 Relief: Why You May Not Have Received an SMS From FG

November 6, 2026 by Kenechukwu Onah

3 min read

Several Nigerians are still waiting for text messages confirming their eligibility for the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 relief grant. However, the government has explained why some prospective beneficiaries may not have received any notification.

The Federal Government has clarified that Nigerians who have yet to receive SMS notifications about its ₦50,000 National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention should not immediately assume they have been excluded.

According to an update published on the programme’s official website, the government is disbursing the grants in phases, with payment providers contacting confirmed beneficiaries in batches.

This means that eligible recipients may receive their notifications at different times. However, delayed messages are not the only reason some Nigerians have yet to hear from the government.

1. FG is sending SMS notifications in batches

One major reason Nigerians may not have received a notification is the government’s phased payment arrangement.

Rather than contacting all beneficiaries simultaneously, the approved payment providers are reaching recipients in groups.

The government’s frequently asked questions page explained that some beneficiaries might receive their messages later because notifications are not being sent out at once.

Therefore, the absence of an SMS does not automatically mean a person has been rejected.

2. Not everyone will receive the ₦50,000 grant

Another important reason is that the intervention does not cover every Nigerian.

The government has explained that the scheme is designed to support a limited number of households in each phase.

Consequently, some people who are expecting the monthly ₦50,000 payment may not be included in the current beneficiary list.

The government has also clarified that beneficiaries are selected based on existing records rather than an open application process.

3. Beneficiaries are selected from existing government records

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction said beneficiaries are drawn from the National Social Register and verified national identity records.

The selection process considers household needs and seeks to distribute support across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The government also stressed that selection is not based on religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.

This means Nigerians cannot independently register or pay someone to secure a place on the beneficiary list.

How to check your ₦50,000 relief eligibility

Although an SMS notification may not have arrived, Nigerians can check their eligibility through the USSD channels provided by the five approved payment platforms.

These are:

  • OPay
  • Moniepoint
  • ALAT
  • MoMo PSB
  • NairaGram

Users can dial the relevant provider’s USSD code and select the option for checking their relief grant eligibility.

According to the government’s guidelines, people who are not on the current beneficiary list will receive a response stating: “You are currently not selected to receive this relief support.”

However, checking eligibility does not automatically guarantee payment. Disbursement remains subject to beneficiary selection and verification.

FG warns Nigerians against paying agents

The government has also warned Nigerians against fraudsters who promise to secure a place on the beneficiary list or speed up payments in exchange for money.

The ₦50,000 intervention is a grant, not a loan, meaning recipients are not expected to repay the money.

Beneficiaries should also avoid sharing their PINs, one-time passwords (OTPs) or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) with anyone claiming to facilitate payment.

The government said accepting the grant and responding to official programme messages do not attract charges.

For Nigerians still waiting for an SMS, the important thing is to check their eligibility through the approved channels rather than paying unofficial agents or sharing sensitive banking information.

CrispNG will continue to track updates on the Federal Government’s relief intervention.
