2027 Honda Civic Type R: 7 things to know about Honda’s updated performance car
Honda has unveiled the updated 2027 Civic Type R, giving its high-performance hatchback several changes aimed at improving track performance, comfort and technology.
The 2027 Honda Civic Type R does not get a more powerful engine, but Honda has revised several areas around the car, including its front-end design, suspension, brakes, rev-matching system and cabin.
The updated model also gains features such as heated front seats, Google built-in, additional USB-C ports and an enhanced Honda Sensing safety package.
Here are seven things to know about the 2027 Honda Civic Type R.
2027 Honda Civic Type R gets a redesigned front end
One of the most noticeable changes is at the front of the car.
Honda has redesigned the Civic Type R’s front fascia with a larger grille opening designed to reduce airflow turbulence and improve engine cooling.
The car also gets a deeper front splitter. Honda says the change increases downforce, which can help improve stability during high-speed driving.
The revisions are particularly aimed at sustained performance during demanding track driving.
2027 Honda Civic Type R keeps its 315-hp engine
Despite the updates, Honda has not increased the Type R’s engine output for 2027.
The car continues with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
Power goes exclusively to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and a helical limited-slip differential.
The engine has a 7,000-rpm redline, while the vehicle uses a lightweight single-mass flywheel and a rev-match system.
This means buyers looking for a major power increase will not find one in the 2027 model. Instead, Honda has focused on refining how the car responds to driver inputs.
2027 Honda Civic Type R gets suspension and brake changes
Honda has also revised the car’s chassis.
The adaptive dampers have been retuned in the +R driving mode. According to Honda, the changes are intended to improve road-following performance while reducing bouncing and impact harshness.
The brake pedal has also been revised.
Honda added a yoke spring to the brake-pedal linkage to reduce play and provide a more direct pedal feel.
The changes are designed to give drivers greater confidence when controlling the car, especially during performance driving.
2027 Honda Civic Type R gets a faster rev-match system
The manual gearbox remains a major part of the Civic Type R experience.
For 2027, Honda has improved its Rev Match system, which automatically adjusts engine speed during downshifts.
The updated system is designed to provide quicker engine response and smoother downshifts.
The car remains one of the few performance vehicles in its class offered exclusively with a manual transmission. Honda says the Type R is the only car in its class available solely with a manual gearbox.
2027 Honda Civic Type R finally gets heated front seats
The changes are not limited to performance.
For the first time, the Civic Type R gets heated front sport seats as standard equipment. The seats have three heating levels and retain the model’s red, high-friction suede-like upholstery.
Honda has also added Ultrasuede to the dashboard and upper front door panels.
The dashboard receives a new diamond-pattern trim panel, while several interior components get darker finishes.
The aluminum shift knob, console trim and door handles now use darker grey finishes. The car also gets black climate-control and air-vent knobs, along with silver front door-panel trim.
An auto-dimming rearview mirror is also now standard.
2027 Honda Civic Type R gets more technology
Honda has upgraded the Type R’s technology for the new model year.
The 2027 car introduces Google built-in, including Google Maps, Google Play and Google Gemini. Alexa is also built into the vehicle.
The car retains wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while two USB-C ports have been added above the standard wireless phone charger.
The standard equipment also includes a 9-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system.
These additions give the Type R more connectivity while preserving its driver-focused cabin.
2027 Honda Civic Type R gets safety upgrades
Honda has also updated the car’s driver-assistance systems.
The 2027 Civic Type R comes with the Honda Sensing suite, including collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot information, cross-traffic monitoring and traffic-sign recognition.
Honda says the collision mitigation braking system has improved visibility of motorcycles and bicycles.
The adaptive cruise control system has also received changes to its braking and acceleration response.
Another addition is Post-Collision Braking, which is standard on every 2027 Civic Type R and is designed to help reduce the risk of secondary collisions after certain crashes.
2027 Honda Civic Type R price and colours
The 2027 Civic Type R starts at $48,695 in the United States, excluding the destination charge and other applicable costs.
Honda lists the total suggested retail price, including its $1,295 destination charge, at $49,990 before taxes, registration, premium paint charges and dealer-installed accessories.
The car also gets a new Meteorite Gray Metallic exterior colour.
Other available colours include Boost Blue Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl and Championship White.
Honda says the updated 2027 Civic Type R is arriving at dealerships in October 2026.
The 2027 model also marks an important anniversary for the performance nameplate. Honda is celebrating 30 years of the Civic Type R globally and 10 years since the model officially arrived in North America.
Rather than redesigning the powertrain, Honda has concentrated on refining the areas that affect driving response and everyday usability. The result is a Civic Type R that retains its 315-hp turbocharged engine and six-speed manual gearbox while gaining revised aerodynamics, suspension and braking, plus more comfort and technology.
