2026 Emmys: Widow’s Bay, The Pitt dominate as Matthew Rhys makes history
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards delivered a night of major wins and historic moments, with Widow’s Bay and The Pitt emerging as the biggest winners at the ceremony in Los Angeles.
Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay took home Outstanding Comedy Series, while HBO Max’s medical drama The Pitt retained the Outstanding Drama Series award it won last year.
The ceremony, hosted by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay, was held at the Peacock Theater on Monday, September 14, following two nights of Creative Arts Emmy presentations earlier in the month.
Widow’s Bay dominates
Widow’s Bay was the biggest overall winner of the 2026 Emmy season, collecting a record 14 awards across the Creative Arts and Primetime ceremonies.
The Apple TV horror comedy won Outstanding Comedy Series and several acting awards, including Lead Actor for Matthew Rhys, Supporting Actor for Stephen Root and Supporting Actress for Kate O’Flynn.
It also won awards for directing and writing, cementing its position as one of the biggest television successes of the year.
The show’s success came despite strong competition from established programmes such as Hacks, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building.
The Pitt repeats as best drama
The Pitt successfully defended its Outstanding Drama Series title, becoming one of the night’s biggest drama winners.
Noah Wyle also won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in the medical drama.
The win came after The Pitt led the nominations with 25 nods, giving the HBO Max series a strong showing throughout the awards season.
Rhea Seehorn, meanwhile, won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus.
Other drama acting winners included Allison Janney, who won Supporting Actress for The Diplomat, and Tom Pelphrey, who took Supporting Actor for Task.
Matthew Rhys makes Emmy history
One of the night’s most notable moments came from Matthew Rhys.
The Welsh actor won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for The Beast in Me.
His double victory made him the first actor to win two lead acting Emmy categories in the same ceremony.
The achievement added another major milestone to a night already dominated by records.
Jean Smart continues her winning streak
Jean Smart won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, extending her remarkable run in the category.
It was her fifth consecutive win for the role and placed her among the actresses with the most Emmy acting victories.
The win also strengthened Hacks’s place in Emmy history despite the series receiving fewer major awards than some of its competitors on the night.
DTF St. Louis wins limited series
HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, beating nominees including The Beast in Me, Beef and All Her Fault.
The series also collected major acting honours, while Sally Field won Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures.
Rhys’s victory for The Beast in Me also contributed to his historic double on the night.
Other major winners
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series, while The Traitors took the award for Outstanding Reality Competition Programme.
Alan Cumming also won Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Programme for The Traitors.
The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show starring Bad Bunny won Outstanding Variety Special (Live).
Michael J. Fox was presented with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic work and advocacy linked to Parkinson’s disease.
The 2026 Emmys therefore ended with several programmes and performers strengthening their places in television history.
While The Pitt remained the dominant drama, Widow’s Bay emerged as the night’s biggest overall success, and Matthew Rhys provided one of the ceremony’s defining moments with his unprecedented double acting victory.
