LiverpoolFootball Club has expressed interest in Italian winger Federico Chiesa for a fee around €15 million (£12.7m; $16.7m) due to the player only having a year left on his contract as they consider strengthening their squad in the final days of the transfer window.

The 26-year-old, currently playing for Juventus, has become a target for Liverpool as they seek to add depth to their attacking lineup.

Juventus is reportedly open to the possibility of transferring Chiesa, who has been with the club since 2020. Initially joining on loan from Fiorentina, Chiesa’s move to Juventus was made permanent in 2022.

During his time in Turin, Chiesa has shown his potential, particularly during the 2020-2021 season when he was instrumental in both Serie A and the UEFA Champions League. However, his progress was hampered by a serious knee injury that sidelined him for several months.

Despite these setbacks, Chiesa remains a highly regarded player, known for his speed, skill, and ability to play in multiple attacking positions. Juventus, facing financial considerations and a desire to reshape their squad, is exploring options for his transfer, making him available on the market.

Liverpool is exploring the possibility of bringing Chiesa to Anfield, assessing the financial terms and the player’s interest in moving to the Premier League. It would give him the chance to prove himself in one of the most challenging football environments.

The question of how Chiesa will fit in the squad is answered by the preference of the new club manager Ann Slot. Wingers are key in Slot’s system, he likes them to be unpredictable and strong in their one-on-one duels, capable of carrying and progressing the ball while linking up with team-mates.

Despite his injury record which may be a concern, Chiesa is a winger who loves to drift inside the opponent’s box, allowing the side’s full-backs to overlap, and create low crosses from the byline. This is an important feature in Ann Slot’s tactics and would add to the options in the squad.

Chiesa can operate on both flanks but predominantly plays on the right, so would face an almost impossible battle with Salah this season.

Salah’s longer-term future, however, remains in doubt. The Egyptian playmaker is in the last year of his contract, he turns 33 next summer and talks have yet to begin over a renewal. If there is no injury for Chiesa through the season, Liverpool might let Salah go as a free agent.

As the transfer window deadline approaches, the next few days will be crucial in determining whether Chiesa will join Liverpool. This potential move reflects Liverpool’s ongoing commitment to competing at the highest level in both domestic and European football, with Chiesa possibly playing a key role in their future successes.
