What went wrong for Nigeria as Guinea-Bissau stunned Super Eagles 3-0?
Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a heavy setback in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after Guinea-Bissau defeated them 3-0 in Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.
The result was a sharp contrast to Nigeria’s opening-day comeback against Madagascar and leaves Eric Chelle’s side with three points from two matches in Group L.

But beyond the scoreline, the Nigeria Guinea-Bissau defeat exposed several problems for the Super Eagles, particularly their difficulty in responding after falling behind.
Nigeria Guinea-Bissau: An early goal changed the game
Nigeria started the match knowing that a win would give them an important advantage in the group, but Guinea-Bissau quickly took control.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute after creating space on the edge of the Nigerian penalty area before curling the ball beyond Stanley Nwabali.
The early goal gave the hosts something to protect while forcing Nigeria to chase the game.

Nigeria Guinea-Bissau: Changes failed to turn the game around
Chelle attempted to change the situation at half-time by introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi.
The substitutions gave Nigeria additional attacking options, but Guinea-Bissau remained dangerous and eventually increased their advantage.
Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ lead in the 66th minute after getting into the Nigerian penalty area and finishing past Nwabali.
At 2-0, Nigeria needed a quick response to remain in contention. Instead, Guinea-Bissau continued to defend their advantage and created opportunities of their own.

Nigeria Guinea-Bissau: Super Eagles struggled to recover
One of the biggest differences between Nigeria’s opening qualifier and Tuesday’s match was their response after conceding.
Against Madagascar, Nigeria recovered from an early deficit to win 2-1. In Bissau, however, the Super Eagles could not find a way back after Djú’s opening goal.
Guinea-Bissau took advantage of Nigeria’s need to push forward and completed the victory in stoppage time.

Nigeria Guinea-Bissau: The qualification picture has changed
The defeat has also altered the early picture in Group L.
Guinea-Bissau now have six points from two matches, while Nigeria remain on three points. Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON finals because they are co-hosts.
As a result, only the highest-placed non-host nation from Group L will qualify alongside Tanzania.

For Nigeria, the situation is therefore not decided after two matches, but the margin for error has become smaller.
What the defeat means for Eric Chelle
The loss was also significant for Chelle personally.

More importantly, the match exposed how quickly Nigeria can lose control when an opponent scores first and successfully protects its advantage.
