What to know about Ehie Edison, Rivers speaker who resigned amid political crisis
Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to the Late Chief Clinton Dollars Ehie and Mrs. Salome Ehie, Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison is a distinguished politician and lawyer hailing from the Ekpeye ethnic community.
His educational journey started at UPE Primary School, followed by Western Ahoada County High School in Ahoada Town. He holds a degree in Law from Rivers State University and furthered his studies with a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration and a Master’s degree in Petroleum Law.
Career and leadership roles
Edison’s leadership journey began as the National President of the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) and later as the National President of the Orashi Youth Council.
His involvement as the Youth Leader for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ahoada East Local Government Area showcased his commitment to community service. A multifaceted individual, he is not only a seasoned politician but also a successful businessman, farmer, and devout Christian.
Political ascendancy
Elected to the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison has consistently represented the Ahoada East II constituency.
His re-election in 2016, 2019, and 2023 attests to the trust and confidence the constituents place in him. In October 2023, he achieved another milestone by being elected as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Personal life
In 2019, Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison tied the knot with Pharm. Cynthia Edison (nee Obuzor) in a grand ceremony held at Rivers State Ecumenical Christian Unity Centre, Abhonema Wholf Road, Rumuwoji, Port Harcourt.
The reception, hosted at Presidential Hotel, New GRA, Port Harcourt, became a significant event in the region.
Recent developments
However, in a surprising turn of events, Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison submitted his resignation as the member representing Ahoada East in the Rivers State House of Assembly and as the Speaker of the State amidst political crisis ravaging the state.
