The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the most prestigious international men’s football competition in Africa and it is contested by the member nations of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The tournament started in 1957 with just three nations (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia) participating in the inaugural edition, since then, the competition has turned to be the biggest football event in Africa and now has 24 countries in the main draw and 52 in the qualifiers.
AFCON has been held 33 times and 14 different countries have lifted the title till now. Egypt is the first AFCON winners after beating Ethiopia 4-0 in the final of the first edition and they are also the most successful nation in the competition with seven titles followed by Cameroon that have won the championship five times. After 16 trials, Senegal finally won their first AFCON by beating Egypt 1-0 in the last edition of the competition hosted by Cameroon in 2021.
