UK Skilled Worker Visa: 5 Ways Foreigners Can Qualify With Lower Salaries
Foreign workers seeking jobs in the United Kingdom may qualify for a Skilled Worker visa even if they earn less than the standard annual salary requirement of £41,700.
The UK government has outlined specific categories of applicants who can qualify under lower salary thresholds. These include young professionals, recent graduates, workers with relevant doctoral qualifications and people taking certain research positions.
However, earning below £41,700 does not automatically make a foreign worker eligible. Applicants must meet the conditions for a salary discount and satisfy the other requirements of the visa route.
According to the UK government’s official guidance, some eligible applicants may qualify with salaries starting at £33,400 a year. The exact amount depends on the applicant’s circumstances and the standard salary rate for the job.
What is the UK Skilled Worker Visa?
The Skilled Worker visa allows eligible foreign nationals to work in the UK for an employer approved by the Home Office.
Applicants must have a job offer from an approved employer. The role must qualify under the visa rules, and the employer must issue a Certificate of Sponsorship.
Workers must also meet the applicable salary threshold and English-language requirements. The salary requirement usually stands at £41,700 a year or the job’s standard going rate, whichever is higher.
However, the government provides specific exceptions that allow some applicants to qualify with lower salaries. These exceptions do not apply to every job or every foreign worker.
1. UK Skilled Worker Visa for young professionals and recent graduates
Young professionals and certain recent graduates may qualify for the visa with a lower salary than the standard threshold.
Under this route, eligible applicants can receive between 70% and 90% of their job’s standard going rate, provided they earn at least £33,400 annually.
The category covers people who are under 26 when they apply, as well as some people studying in the UK or who recently completed eligible studies.
Applicants may also qualify if they are working towards a recognised qualification in a regulated profession or pursuing full registration or chartered status in their sponsored job.
However, there are conditions attached to this option. Applicants relying on the new-entrant provisions cannot spend more than four years in the UK under the relevant limit, including time already spent on a Graduate visa.
Foreign workers should therefore check their immigration history and circumstances before relying on this salary concession.
2. UK Skilled Worker Visa for workers with a relevant STEM PhD
Foreign workers with a relevant doctoral qualification in science, technology, engineering or mathematics may qualify under a separate salary concession.
Eligible applicants can be paid 80% of the standard going rate for their occupation. However, their annual salary must still be at least £33,400.
The qualification must relate to the job the applicant intends to perform. Holding a doctorate alone does not guarantee eligibility.
Applicants with overseas qualifications must also establish that their qualification is equivalent to a UK PhD. The government advises applicants to use Ecctis for the relevant assessment where required.
The sponsored job must also qualify for the PhD salary discount. Applicants should confirm their occupation code and the applicable salary rate before accepting an offer.
3. UK Skilled Worker Visa for workers with a non-STEM PhD
Applicants with relevant doctoral qualifications outside science, technology, engineering and mathematics may also qualify for a salary concession.
Under this option, eligible workers can earn 90% of their occupation’s standard going rate. However, their annual salary must be at least £37,500.
As with the STEM route, the qualification must be relevant to the sponsored job. Applicants must also hold a UK PhD or an equivalent overseas qualification.
The role itself must qualify for the concession, and the applicant must satisfy the other visa requirements.
This means a doctoral degree does not automatically allow someone to accept any UK job at a lower salary. The applicant’s qualification, occupation and proposed earnings must meet the government’s conditions.
4. UK Skilled Worker Visa for jobs on the Immigration Salary List
Some foreign workers may qualify for a lower general salary threshold if their sponsored job appears on the UK’s Immigration Salary List.
The list identifies specific occupations that qualify for concessions under the Skilled Worker route.
Eligible applicants sponsored for jobs on the list must earn at least £33,400 annually. However, they must still receive at least the standard going rate for their occupation.
This distinction is important because the £33,400 threshold does not mean every job on the list qualifies at that salary. If the occupation’s standard going rate is higher, the applicant must meet that rate as well.
The list also distinguishes between occupations available across the UK and those eligible only in particular parts of the country.
Foreign workers should check the official list to establish whether their occupation qualifies and which salary requirements apply. They should not assume that a job is eligible simply because an employer is willing to sponsor them.
5. UK Skilled Worker Visa for certain postdoctoral researchers
Certain foreign researchers and academic professionals working in eligible postdoctoral positions may also qualify for a lower salary requirement.
The government allows eligible applicants in specified science and higher-education roles to receive 70% of their job’s standard going rate, provided they meet the applicable minimum salary requirement.
The eligible occupation codes include chemical scientists, biological scientists, physical scientists, social and humanities scientists, certain other research professionals and higher-education teaching professionals.
However, the concession does not cover every research or university position. Applicants must check whether their specific occupation code falls within the government’s approved categories.
Those relying on this option must also observe the applicable four-year limit, which includes relevant time already spent in the UK on a Graduate visa.
Other requirements foreign workers must meet
Qualifying for a lower salary threshold does not remove the other requirements of the Skilled Worker visa.
Applicants must still secure an eligible job with an employer approved by the Home Office. Their employer must provide the necessary sponsorship, and their salary must meet the rules for their specific occupation and circumstances.
The standard salary requirement also depends on the job’s going rate. Consequently, an applicant who meets the general minimum may still fall short if the occupation requires a higher salary.
Some healthcare and education roles operate under different salary rules. Applicants extending or updating existing visas may also fall under separate provisions.
Foreign workers should therefore check the requirements for their exact job before making plans to move to the UK.
The UK government’s official Skilled Worker visa guidance provides information about eligible jobs, salary requirements, sponsorship and the application process.
What applicants should know
The lower salary routes offer eligible foreign workers an alternative to the standard £41,700 annual threshold. However, they are specific concessions, not a general reduction for everyone seeking employment in Britain.
Young professionals, recent graduates, relevant PhD holders, workers in listed occupations and certain postdoctoral researchers may qualify, depending on their circumstances.
Applicants should confirm their occupation code, check the applicable going rate and ensure that their employer can sponsor them before submitting an application.
They should also consult the official rules for any changes to salary thresholds or eligibility conditions before making immigration decisions.
