UAE Golden Visa: Full list of exceptional talents eligible for 10-year residency

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has outlined the categories of exceptional talents who can qualify for its 10-year Golden Residency, offering a long-term route for people with recognised achievements in creative, scientific, professional and sporting fields.

The programme is designed for individuals whose skills or achievements meet specific criteria set by the UAE authorities. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) lists exceptional talents among the categories eligible for 10-year Golden Residency.

The UAE’s official guidance shows that the Exceptional Talents route covers culture and arts, scientists and specialised professionals, sports talents, as well as other exceptional fields considered important by the relevant government authorities.

Unlike an ordinary visit visa, the Golden Residency is a long-term residence programme. Eligible holders can live, work and study in the UAE without requiring a traditional sponsor, subject to the applicable rules.

Here is what applicants need to know.

UAE Golden Visa for culture and arts talents

The UAE Golden Visa is available to people with recognised achievements in creative and artistic fields.

The official ICP guidance divides the culture and arts route into three categories: Creative, Distinguished and Distinguished Professional.

Creative Category

Applicants under the Creative Category may qualify if they have received a prestigious and internationally recognised global or international award in their creative field.

The criteria also cover people who have been nominated for such awards, received recognition from a prestigious international organisation for outstanding creative contributions, or hold an honorary position with a prestigious international organisation because of their creativity and achievements.

Distinguished Category

This category covers people whose creative achievements have received recognition at the local or regional level.

Applicants may qualify through a prestigious local or regional award, a nomination for such an award, or an honorary position with a recognised local or regional organisation in recognition of their creative achievements.

Distinguished Professional Category

Creative professionals can also qualify through their professional record.

The UAE requires at least five years of professional experience in intellectual or creative production.

Applicants in this category may also need to demonstrate that their works have been published or distributed locally, regionally or internationally within the previous three years.

The authorities may consider recognition from the creative community, collaborations with well-known organisations, media or critics’ attention and active membership of a prestigious international arts organisation.

Scientists and specialised professionals

The UAE Golden Visa also covers scientists, researchers and professionals with significant achievements in their fields.

Scientists and researchers must have significant achievements and high impact, with a recommendation from the Emirates Scientists Council.

Leading scientists and religious scholars may qualify through recommendations from the relevant UAE authorities.

The route also covers leading specialists in industries and Fourth Industrial Revolution fields, healthcare and education. The relevant government authorities are responsible for recommendations in these areas.

The programme also includes skilled professionals occupying senior occupational levels under the UAE’s approved occupational classification.

Specialised professionals

Another category is available to specialised professionals who meet specific employment, education and salary requirements.

Applicants must have a valid UAE work permit under an approved employment contract.

They must also hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

In addition, the official requirement sets a minimum monthly salary of AED30,000 for this category.

Applicants and their family members must also maintain comprehensive and valid health insurance throughout the validity of the residency.

At the current exchange rate, AED30,000 is a substantial salary threshold, meaning this particular route is aimed at highly paid specialised professionals rather than every foreign worker in the UAE.

Sports talents

Athletes and other sports professionals can also qualify for the 10-year Golden Residency.

The UAE’s criteria include applicants who have achieved outstanding sporting accomplishments or demonstrated exceptional excellence in their field.

The rules also cover people who hold leadership positions in international sports federations, committees or organisations.

Specialists in sports medicine with notable achievements or contributions may also qualify under the sports talents category.

Digital technology and other exceptional talents

The UAE’s broader Golden Residency framework also identifies innovators and inventors, athletes, digital technology talents and exceptional talents in other fields considered important by government authorities as eligible exceptional-talent areas.

This means the exceptional-talent programme is not limited to artists, doctors, scientists or professional athletes.

However, being employed in one of these sectors does not automatically guarantee a Golden Visa. Applicants must meet the applicable criteria and, where required, obtain a recommendation or approval from the relevant UAE authority.

How long is the UAE Golden Visa valid?

The Golden Residency for exceptional talents is issued for 10 years.

The ICP provides a dedicated service for individuals with specialised talents to complete the process of obtaining the 10-year Golden Residence. Applications can be submitted through the ICP Smart App or the ICP Smart Services website.

Applicants should therefore check the latest requirements before applying because the evidence required can vary depending on the talent category.

The UAE’s official Golden Residency guide provides the current categories and requirements.

Can Nigerians apply for the UAE Golden Visa?

The exceptional-talent route is not presented by the UAE authorities as a programme restricted to citizens of particular countries.

Instead, eligibility is based on the applicant’s category, qualifications, achievements, recommendations and other requirements.

This means Nigerians who meet the relevant criteria can explore the route.

However, Nigerian applicants should not assume that simply being a creative professional, doctor, athlete, scientist or highly paid worker automatically qualifies them.

The UAE requires supporting evidence and, for several categories, recommendations from relevant authorities.

What documents may applicants need?

The exact documents depend on the category.

Applicants may need evidence of professional experience, awards, nominations, published or distributed creative works, employment, educational qualifications, salary, professional achievements or recommendations from the relevant UAE authority.

For specialised professionals, the official requirements specifically include a valid UAE work permit, an approved employment contract, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a monthly salary of at least AED30,000.

Creative professionals may instead need evidence showing their work, recognition and professional history.

Applicants should therefore identify their exact category before preparing an application.

What to know before applying

The UAE Golden Visa offers a 10-year residency route, but it is not a general visa available to everyone who wants to relocate to the UAE.

The exceptional-talent pathway is based on demonstrated achievements and specific eligibility requirements.

For creative professionals, international, regional or local recognition can be relevant depending on the category.

For scientists and specialists, recommendations from relevant authorities may be required.

For specialised professionals, the UAE sets specific employment, education and salary conditions.

Sports professionals must demonstrate recognised achievements or expertise.

The safest approach for prospective applicants is to check the requirements for their specific category through the UAE’s official ICP platform before paying anyone to process an application.

The ICP also provides the official application service for individuals with specialised talents.

This distinction is important because meeting the general description of an “exceptional talent” does not by itself mean an applicant will receive the 10-year residency. The final application must satisfy the applicable requirements and approval process.
