Tinubu Signs Law Upgrading Kaduna Polytechnic to University

President Bola Tinubu has signed a law converting Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, into the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.

The development was announced by Daniel Amos, the lawmaker representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, on Friday, October 16.

The new law replaces the legislation that established the polytechnic and gives the institution a university status, with a focus on technology and vocational education.

According to reports by Vanguard and Voice of Nigeria, the bill was sponsored by Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Amos, who chairs the House Committee on House Services, said the upgrade would create opportunities to expand degree programmes, strengthen research and improve technical and vocational training.

He also commended Tinubu for signing the bill and Abbas for sponsoring the legislation.

The lawmaker said the new university could improve access to higher education for people in Kaduna State and neighbouring communities. He added that its focus on practical skills could help prepare graduates for the demands of the labour market.

However, details about when the university will begin operating under its new structure, the courses it will offer and how the transition will affect current students have not been provided in the announcement.

Tinubu also assented to a separate bill establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies in Yaba, Lagos. That legislation was also sponsored by Abbas.

The two institutions are expected to focus on technology, vocational training and skills development.

Amos congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the management, staff and students of the former polytechnic, on the development. He also expressed support for efforts to ensure a smooth transition to the new university.
