President Bola Tinubu has announced the launch of a scholarship scheme for students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), set to commence in the next academic year. The initiative was revealed during a joint press conference with Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip Pierre, on Monday in Gros Islet.

The scholarship program, developed in partnership with OECS leadership, aims to foster educational collaboration between Nigeria and the Caribbean region. A joint implementation committee, comprising representatives from Nigeria and OECS member states, will oversee the rollout, finalizing modalities to ensure students can begin their studies in Nigeria as planned.

President Tinubu highlighted the scheme as part of a broader cooperation framework between Nigeria and the OECS, which also includes priorities such as visa facilitation, improved air connectivity, trade, and tourism. The announcement follows Tinubu’s address to a special joint session of Saint Lucia’s Senate and House of Assembly, where he outlined his vision for renewed engagement with the Caribbean.

Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely demonstration of solidarity. “We expect students to begin their studies in Nigeria in the next academic year, based on the President’s directive,” he said, expressing hope for swift progress.

The scholarship program marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to expand its educational and diplomatic outreach, building on its historical role as a regional power in Africa.
