Pro Ref Admits VAR Error Over Haaland Goal — What Happens Now?

Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester derby will stand despite Pro Ref admitting that an error was made in awarding Erling Haaland’s controversial winning goal.

The refereeing body contacted Manchester United after the match to acknowledge what it described as an “error of judgement” in the decision that allowed Haaland’s 60th-minute goal to stand.

The admission is likely to fuel further debate over the use of VAR in the Premier League, particularly because United were told that the referee should have been asked to review the incident himself.

But despite the admission, Manchester United will not be awarded the match or have the result automatically changed.

What happened with Haaland’s goal?

Haaland’s goal initially appeared to have been ruled out for offside. VAR then reviewed the decision and determined that the Manchester City striker was in an onside position.

The problem was not Haaland’s position.

During the same attack, City midfielder Enzo Fernández was in an offside position and attempted to play the ball. Although Fernández did not make contact with it, his movement became central to the controversy because of his proximity to the play and the impact it may have had on United’s defenders and goalkeeper.

VAR determined that Fernández had not played the ball and therefore did not commit an offside offence.

However, Pro Ref has now acknowledged that the situation was subjective and that VAR failed to properly consider whether Fernández’s position had influenced the play.

According to the refereeing body, the VAR should have recommended that the referee conduct an on-field review before deciding whether the goal should stand.

That is significant because it means the controversy was not simply a disagreement between Manchester United and the officials.

The organisation responsible for Premier League refereeing has effectively accepted that the process used to reach the decision was flawed.

Will Manchester United get the points?

No.

The most immediate consequence of the admission is not a change to the Premier League table.

Manchester City will retain their 1-0 victory and the three points that came with it. There is no indication that the Premier League will replay the match or retrospectively remove Haaland’s goal.

The admission is instead an acknowledgement that the officials made the wrong judgement during the match.

This distinction is important.

Football authorities routinely review controversial refereeing decisions after matches. An admission that an official or VAR made a mistake does not normally give a team the right to have the result changed.

In this case, United therefore remain defeated despite the refereeing body acknowledging that the decisive incident should have been handled differently.

Could the referee or VAR officials be punished?

That is where the review could have consequences.

Pro Ref has confirmed that a review of the incident will take place.

The review could examine how the VAR assessed Fernández’s involvement, why an on-field review was not recommended and whether the officials correctly applied the relevant offside interpretation.

Any disciplinary or appointment-related consequences would be an internal matter.

The officials could potentially face reduced opportunities to officiate upcoming matches if their performance is judged to have fallen below the required standard, although any specific punishment would depend on the outcome of the review.

For Manchester United, however, such action would not recover the points lost at Old Trafford.

Why the admission matters

The biggest issue is what the incident says about VAR.

VAR was introduced partly to reduce major refereeing errors, but it does not eliminate human judgement from football.

In the Haaland incident, the technology was able to determine that Haaland himself was onside. The difficult question was whether Fernández, who was offside and attempted to reach the ball, interfered with the play.

That required interpretation rather than simply drawing an offside line.

Pro Ref’s admission suggests that the problem was not necessarily that VAR lacked the technology to examine the incident. Instead, the issue was that the officials did not properly recognise the significance of Fernández’s position and failed to send the referee to the monitor.

That distinction could make the incident an important reference point for future VAR decisions.

United still have themselves to blame

While the refereeing decision will dominate discussion, Manchester United’s performance will also come under scrutiny.

City played more than an hour with 10 men after Phil Foden was sent off, giving United a significant numerical advantage.

Yet United failed to turn that advantage into a goal and ultimately conceded to Haaland.

The result therefore cannot be attributed solely to the controversial decision.

However, when a match is decided by a single goal and the refereeing body subsequently acknowledges an error in the process that allowed that goal to stand, the decision naturally becomes the defining moment of the game.

For United, the frustration will be that an admission of error does not translate into points.

For City, the three points remain intact.

And for the Premier League’s refereeing authorities, the incident provides another difficult test of whether VAR is actually improving decision-making or simply creating a different form of controversy.

The result will remain Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City, but the debate over Haaland’s goal is unlikely to end with the final whistle.
