OAU final-year student dies: What the university says as police investigate
A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has died under circumstances that have prompted a police investigation, with reports suggesting that the death may have been a suicide.
The deceased, identified as Oluwole Oluwaseun, was a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
OAU said it received information about an emergency involving the student at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
The university’s Quick Response and Security Team immediately went to the location, while officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, were contacted and joined the university personnel at the scene.
Oluwaseun was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
However, while some reports have described the incident as suicide, the university has not publicly established that as the cause of death.
Instead, OAU said it handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for investigation.
What happened at the student’s apartment?
The incident reportedly occurred at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout.
The university said it was alerted to an emergency involving the student and immediately deployed its response and security team.
Police officers subsequently joined the university personnel at the location before the student was conveyed to the university Health Centre, where he was certified dead.

OAU asks students to seek help
