By Israel Igiri
It has been an amazing year in the sporting world. From football to basketball to tennis, down to boxing and various other sports, there were lovely moments and actions to savour all through the year 2018. Amongst the various sporting actions that went down across various centres in Europe, Africa, South America, Asia, North America and Oceania, let us find out which ones standout for the fans.
Chidiebere Kalu captures his most memorable moments thus “Number one is Chelsea ending Manchester City’s unbeaten by defeating them 2-0 with Hazard giving two assists. I was over the moon. Also, Russia eliminating Spain from the World Cup via penalty shootout. Unbelievable! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Again, Naomi Osaka beating the legendary Serena Williams in the final of the US Open. That was the bomb. Belgium also knocking out Brazil from the World Cup was an incredible scene.
He continues “Khabib Nurmagomedov surprisingly knocking out Conor McGregor in the first round of their bout made me go over the moon. Liverpool defeating Manchester City 3 nil in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. Fast-paced and exciting football at its best. Then, AS Roma surprisingly knocking Barcelona out of the UCL by beating them 3 nil in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.”
For Osmond Anyaka, “To me, the 2018 FIFA World Cup is my most memorable moment especially watching France dominating so well in the competition and Kylian Mbappe’s exceptional performance.”
Nobert Nwobodo has got this to say “My best sporting moment for the year 2018 has to be Luka Modric clinching the Ballon d’ or award ahead of Messi and Ronaldo. It was the first time in 11 years that neither the Argentine nor the Portuguese was recognized as the world’s best player for France Football’s acclaimed award. Despite having won the FIFA’s Best awards and the UEFA’s best player awards, I was still not convinced that he was going to clinch the award ahead of Griezmann, Messi and especially Ronaldo.”
Alfred Ortese notes briefly “ My most memorable sporting moment was Mohamed Salah breaking the EPL goalscorer record with 32 goals. It is memorable because an African player did that.”
Noting briefly also, Agaba Sunday has this to say “Messi’s hat-trick against Levante in December. The manner in which he tore apart the defence was amazing. Anyone who saw the game would know he is the best in the world.
For Dr. Rueben Orowuje, “My most memorable sporting moment was the Champions League match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield. I never for once believed Liverpool would blow City away in the first 30 minutes of the match by scoring three goals. The second was the match between AS Roma and Barcelona at the Stadio Olimpico that Roma won by three unreplied goals. It was a shocker to me. Dr. Orowuje
Paul Nwodo summarizes his most memorable moment in few lines, noting “My most memorable moment was Ronaldo’s penalty kick against Juventus in the second leg of the Champions Leg. Real Madrid were outplayed in that match and needed that goal to qualify and Ronaldo converted the chance.”
Indeed, 2018 has been an awesome year for sports fans all over the world. With great competition set to continue in various sports across various continents of the world in 2019, the fans will surely have great moments to savour next year.
