Three convicted killers have been handed whole-life prison orders after murdering fellow inmate Kyle Bevan in a brutal and carefully planned attack inside HMP Wakefield, one of the United Kingdom’s most secure prisons.

The case has drawn national attention not only because of the shocking nature of the killing but also because Bevan himself was serving a life sentence for the murder of two-year-old Lola James. The fatal prison attack has reignited concerns over violence inside high-security prisons and the challenges authorities face in managing some of Britain’s most dangerous offenders.

Kyle Bevan Murdered in Premeditated Prison Attack

A jury at Leeds Crown Court found Mark Fellows, Lee Newell and David Taylor guilty of murdering 33-year-old Kyle Bevan inside HMP Wakefield on November 4, 2025.

According to evidence presented during the trial, Bevan entered his prison cell before the three inmates followed him inside. CCTV footage showed the trio entering the cell together and remaining there for several minutes before leaving.

Investigators revealed that Bevan was stabbed more than 25 times with makeshift weapons, including a sharpened metal piece removed from the back of a television set. The attack caused severe injuries to his neck, heart and major blood vessels, leading to fatal blood loss.

The court heard that Bevan was never seen alive again after the three men entered his cell.

Killers Tried to Make It Look Like Bevan Was Sleeping

Prosecutors said the attackers attempted to conceal the murder by placing Bevan’s body in bed to make it appear as though he was asleep.

As a result, prison staff did not discover his death until the following morning during a routine roll call.

The prison was immediately placed under lockdown while investigators launched a major inquiry.

Searches conducted afterward uncovered blood-stained items and makeshift weapons in the defendants’ cells. Forensic evidence linked several of the recovered items directly to Bevan.

Why Was Kyle Bevan Targeted?

During sentencing, Mrs Justice McGowan stated that Bevan was deliberately selected because of his conviction for the murder of two-year-old Lola James in Pembrokeshire in 2020.

The judge told the defendants that they had specifically chosen Bevan as their target due to widespread hostility toward child killers within prison populations.

Evidence presented during the trial suggested the murder was planned in advance. CCTV footage showed the three men meeting repeatedly in the days before the attack and moving together between prison cells shortly before carrying out the killing.

The judge described the attack as a coordinated and ruthless act of violence.

Mark Fellows

Fellows was already serving a whole-life order for two gangland murders. He was convicted of killing crime figure Paul Massey in 2015 and mob associate John Kinsella in 2018.

Lee Newell

Newell had previously received a whole-life sentence after murdering another inmate who had been convicted of killing a child. The court noted striking similarities between that killing and the murder of Kyle Bevan.

David Taylor

Taylor was awaiting trial for the murder of Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin when Bevan was killed. He was also convicted of attempting to murder a police officer during a prison interview by stabbing him in the chest with an improvised weapon.

Following Friday’s sentencing, Taylor received a whole-life order for Bevan’s murder in addition to other lengthy prison terms.

Court Hands Down Rare Whole-Life Orders

The sentencing judge imposed whole-life orders on all three men, ensuring they will never be released from prison.

For Fellows and Newell, the court imposed new and separate whole-life sentences despite both already serving such orders.

Judge McGowan said the murder involved exceptional brutality and demonstrated complete disregard for human life.

The court heard that the attackers left the scene appearing satisfied and later received congratulations from other inmates after news of the killing spread through the prison.

Police Describe Murder as a Planned and Brutal Killing

Senior Investigating Officer Chief Inspector James Entwistle of West Yorkshire Police described the murder as a “premeditated brutal attack” carried out by experienced and dangerous offenders.

He said the convictions highlight the commitment of law enforcement and prison authorities to investigate serious crimes committed behind bars.

Entwistle added that prisons must remain secure environments despite housing individuals convicted of the most serious offences.

Renewed Questions Over Violence at HMP Wakefield

The murder of Kyle Bevan occurred during a period of heightened concern over security at HMP Wakefield.

Reports indicate there had been multiple serious incidents inside the prison in the weeks leading up to Bevan’s death, including the fatal stabbing of disgraced Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins.

The latest case has intensified discussions about prisoner safety, prison management and the risks posed by housing some of Britain’s most violent offenders in close proximity.

While the convictions bring legal closure to the case, the murder of Kyle Bevan remains one of the most shocking prison killings in recent UK history.
