Is social media safe? Eniola Ajao explains why her 21-year-old son isn’t online

Nollywood actress Eniola Ajao has revealed why she kept her 21-year-old son, Ayomide Daniel, away from social media.

Ajao explained that the decision predates her acting career, aimed at avoiding the stigma of being a single mother.

“I kept it private fearing it might hinder my chances of finding a partner,” she told Seun Oloketuyi. However, she eventually shared his existence due to perceptions of her as a “young girl” among colleagues.

Ajao previously made headlines when controversial figure Bobrisky was crowned ‘best dressed female’ at her movie premiere, leading to public outcry and her subsequent apology, clarifying it was a publicity stunt.

“It was something I decided a long time ago before I even considered pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.

“When I had him, I worried that no man would want to marry me with a child, so I decided to keep it private. I kept many aspects of my life out of the public eye, including my son,” the actress told Seun Oloketuyi in a recent interview.

Preventing children from accessing social media is a choice many parents make for several reasons.

Some of this reason are:

Cyberbullying: Social media platforms can expose children to cyberbullying, leading to emotional distress and mental health issues.

Inappropriate Content: Children may come across inappropriate content such as violence, explicit language, or adult material, which can negatively impact their development and understanding of appropriate behavior.

Online Predators: Social media can provide a platform for online predators to target vulnerable children, posing serious risks to their safety and well-being.

Time Management: Excessive use of social media can lead to poor time management skills, affecting academic performance and real-life social interactions.

Privacy Concerns: Children may not fully understand the implications of sharing personal information online, potentially exposing themselves to privacy risks and identity theft.

Distraction: Social media can be highly addictive and distracting, diverting children’s attention from more productive activities such as homework, hobbies, or spending quality time with family and friends.

By monitoring and limiting children’s access to social media, parents can help safeguard their well-being and promote healthier offline activities and relationships.
