International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8th, commemorating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide.

With its origins dating back to the early 20th century, the day serves as a rallying point for gender equality and women’s rights movements.

Initially recognized in a handful of countries, IWD has evolved into a global phenomenon, marked by diverse activities including marches, conferences, panel discussions, and cultural events.

Each year, the day is celebrated under a specific theme, reflecting current challenges and aspirations for women’s empowerment.

IWD has its roots in the 1908 labour movement, when women garment workers in New York protested for better pay, shorter hours, and voting rights.

Its first official celebration took place on March 19, 1911, in the United States and several European nations. The United Nations recognized the day in 1975.
