Band A customers of Ikeja Electric can now claim free electricity units through a dedicated online portal, after the company confirmed it has started paying out compensation ordered by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The directive followed weeks of poor power supply to Band A customers — who pay the highest tariff on the promise of at least 20 hours of daily electricity — during nationwide generation shortfalls between February and March 2026.

NERC’s Directive No. NERC/2026/002, issued in June, ordered distribution companies to compensate affected customers for falling short of that promise, even though the shortfalls were largely tied to gas supply disruptions and pipeline vandalism outside the discos’ direct control.

Ikeja Electric’s compensation portal works on a simple lookup system. Customers enter their meter number into a search field, and if their feeder qualifies, the portal displays a message confirming the compensation amount in kilowatt-hours, along with a token to load directly onto their prepaid meter — the same way a regular recharge token works.

A test run on the portal for a feeder in the Alimosho axis confirmed the process works as described: entering the meter number returned a message crediting the account with 26kWh in Band A non-compliance compensation, complete with a redeemable token.

How to Check and Claim Your Compensation

  • Visit the Ikeja Electric Band A Compensation Portal
  • Enter your meter number in the search field
  • Check the message that appears for your eligibility status
  • If eligible, copy the token displayed and load it onto your meter as you would a normal recharge

Not every Band A feeder is covered under the current compensation window, so customers whose meters don’t return a message should check back as Ikeja Electric continues processing claims feeder by feeder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Ikeja Electric giving customers free units?

The compensation is linked to service shortfalls on Band A feeders.

Band A customers are expected to receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity supply daily. Ikeja Electric has previously published public notices apologising to customers when it failed to meet the required service level and has provided compensation for affected customers.

The company has also maintained a dedicated compensation portal for customers affected by Band A service shortfalls.

Who can claim the 26 free units?

The compensation is not necessarily available to every Ikeja Electric customer.

Customers need to be on an eligible Band A feeder and must have been affected by the applicable service shortfall. The portal determines eligibility based on the customer’s account and the relevant compensation period.

Therefore, customers should check their details directly on the official portal rather than assume that every Band A customer will receive exactly 26 units.
