“They were four. Two held my hands and made sure I was on the ground. One held my legs ajar while the remaining one had carnal knowledge me. One after the other, the four of them raped me.”
These were the words of a 19-year-old rape victim (name withheld) whose boyfriend, alongside his three friends, gang-raped in Minna, Niger State.
It was learnt that trouble started for the 19-year-old girl when she turned down a marriage proposal from one of the alleged rapists. Infuriated by the the girl’s refusal to marry her, the 21-year-old boy mobilised his friends and ambushed the girl who was on her way home.
One after the other, the four boys – 21-year-old Muhammed Sirajo, Shafi Muhammed and Muhammed Abubakar each aged 19 years and 16-year-old Musa Ilya – had carnal knowledge of the girl.
The suspects, however, met their Waterloo at Barakin Sale area of Minna when operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) swooped into action after receiving a report of the incident and arrested the four of them.
The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Philip Ayuba, when contacted confirmed the story and the identities of the suspects.
Ayuba disclosed that the suspects had confessed to committing the crime, adding that they had been handed over to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution.
The commandant appealed to the general public to be security conscious and cautioned ladies against walking alone.
