Jack Peter Grealish’s journey at the Etihad has been one of mixed fortunes, since his high-profile £100 million transfer from Aston Villa to Manchester City in 2021. While he played a crucial role in City’s treble-winning campaign in 2022/23, his performance in subsequent seasons has sparked debates about whether he has truly lived up to expectations or is he truly a £100 million player.

Struggles at City

Grealish’s 2023/24 season has been riddled with challenges, including injuries and a lack of consistent game time. He started just 9 out of City’s 33 Premier League matches by April 2024, battling confidence issues and periods of poor form. The player himself admitted that disruptions due to injuries and fluctuating fitness levels affected his rhythm, making it difficult to make a sustained impact

Some critics argue that Grealish has been played out of position under Pep Guardiola, often deployed on the left wing rather than in a central role where he thrived at Aston Villa. This tactical shift, coupled with City’s structured playing style, might have curtailed his ability to express himself creatively.

Despite the criticism, Grealish has shown signs of brilliance, particularly in big games during the 2022/23 season, including the Champions League. However, his inability to deliver consistent goals and assists has been a major sticking point for critics. As the football world increasingly focuses on tangible output, his subtle contributions; such as ball retention and drawing defenders away from the main strikers to provide easy finishing are often undervalued

Challenges and Criticism

Like most players in the premier league who have suffered from injuries that could ruin their beautiful career, Grealish as well has had a great share of it. Recurring injuries have disrupted Grealish’s rhythm, particularly in 2023/24, when he missed several key games during the title race. This inconsistency has further limited his opportunities to build momentum.
In addition to that, the weight of expectations following his record-breaking transfer fee to the Citizens has given football fans, pundits and the media so much reason to always put him in the spotlight. Unlike Villa, where he was the talisman, at City, he competes for attention alongside stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden, which could also cause his poor performances.
Despite his work rate and tactical discipline, critics argue Grealish lacks the goal-scoring instinct of modern wingers. His tally of 11 Premier League goals in 3 seasons for the Citizens is a sharp opposite when compared to other players like Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United.

Is He a Flop?

However, the bigger question still remains in this piece, “is Grealish a flop or just one talent that is yet to be tapped or not suited for clubs and football systems of Managers like Guardiola”. Labeling Grealish as a flop would undermine how important his role and contributions are in Guardiola’s system.

While his performance since 2022/23 season has not equaled the huge expectations that comes with his transfer fee, he has proven himself in critical moments and remains a valuable squad player. However, the mismatch between his creative instincts and City’s rigid tactical setup continues to hinder his ability to fully shine.

Looking Forward

I will want to play the optimistic card to say that the 2024/25 season presents an opportunity for Grealish to prove his worth again, especially with Guardiola likely to rotate his team especially in difficult match schedules.

To silence his critics, Grealish must stay fit, deliver consistently in the attacking third, and adapt further to City’s system while advocating for opportunities in roles that maximize his unique talents. Perhaps a move to clubs like Brighton or Tottenham where he can be guaranteed playing time or may adapt quickly to the system is a better alternative to put him on the right track again.

Ultimately, whether he is deemed a flop or a misunderstood star depends on the context—his role within the team and how his performances are evaluated against the expectations that came with his record-breaking transfer.
