Grass to grace series (20): From hawking orange to Nollywood star, the inspirational journey of Mercy Macjoe

Mercy Macjoe’s journey to success was not an easy one. Raised by a single mother after her father’s untimely death, Mercy had to overcome several challenges to pursue her dreams.

However, her mother’s unwavering support and encouragement played a significant role in her success. “My mum has always been in support of my career choice. She encouraged me to attend talent competitions and gave me transport fares to auditions,” Mercy shared.

Humbling Beginnings

Despite her humble beginnings, Mercy never allowed her circumstances to define her future. “I didn’t have all the opportunities growing up. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon; I had to do many things to survive,” she revealed.

From assisting her mother in her buying and selling business to hawking oranges on the streets, Mercy worked hard to support her family. “I hawked orangenges and helped my family survive. I am proud of my past because it has shaped me into who I am today,” she reflected.

Rising to Prominence

Mercy’s breakthrough in the Nollywood industry came in 2011 with the movie, Sugar Pot. Her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft earned her recognition and numerous lead roles in both Nigerian and Ghanaian films.
