Grass to Grace series (12): From security guard in London to music producer, Don Jazzy’s inspiring journey

Born and raised in Ajegunle, Lagos, the heartbeat of Nigeria’s vibrant music scene, Don Jazzy’s journey to becoming a music maestro is a tale woven with passion, perseverance, and pulsating beats. From the early rhythms of his childhood to the symphony of success he orchestrates today, his story resonates as a melody of resilience.

A musical prodigy emerges

In the narrow alleys of Ajegunle, Micheal Collins Ajereh better known as Don Jazzy found his rhythm at an astonishingly young age. Singing and drumming since the tender age of four, he was a musical prodigy in the making. It was the bass guitar, however, that truly struck a chord with him at 12, setting the stage for a lifelong love affair with music.

Music has always been my heartbeat. It’s like I was born with melodies in my soul and every beat, every note, is a part of who I am.” – Don Jazzy

London calling: Odd jobs and unbroken dreams

In the year 2000, Don Jazzy embarked on a musical pilgrimage to London. His destination? A local church where he played the drums, not just for spiritual resonance but as a means to make ends meet. Unfazed by odd jobs at McDonald’s and a stint as a security guard, his unwavering commitment to music remained steadfast.

London was my crucible—the place where I refined my rhythm, where the clash of cymbals echoed my determination. It was tough, but it forced me into who I am today.” – Don Jazzy

Mo’ hits to Mavin Records

Hits like ‘No Long Thing’ and ‘Rundown’ showcased his exceptional production prowess, accompanied by the unforgettable tag, “It’s Don Jazzy Again.” Despite the eventual closure of Mo’ Hits, he didn’t miss a beat, founding Mavin Records in 2012.

The beats might change, but the heart of the music remains. Mavin Records is a testament to the evolution, the growth, and the undying rhythm of Nigerian music.” – Don Jazzy

Nurturing musical talents

Mavin Records emerged as an entertainment powerhouse, cultivating some of Nigeria’s brightest musical stars, including Rema, Tiwa Savage, and Johnny Drille. Don Jazzy’s keen ear for talent and dedication to nurturing artists has solidified his status as one of Nigeria’s most influential producers.

“Mavin is not just a record label; it’s a family of music enthusiasts, a symphony of diverse talents creating a harmonious blend that reverberates across the industry.” – Don Jazzy
