Grass to grace series (11): From hawking sachet water to Nollywood legend, Mercy Johnson’s inspiring story

Mercy Johnson Ozioma, known to many as Mercy Johnson, has a name that holds a deeper meaning. In her dialect, Ozioma, which translates to “a girl with good luck,” reflects the resilient spirit and inspiring journey of this remarkable woman.

Born into a family of seven, Mercy spent her early years with her father, an ex-military officer who was constantly on the move due to his service. Her father played a significant role in shaping her character and teaching her valuable lessons about life’s transitions.

During her time in secondary school, Mercy took on odd jobs to support her family. She washed her classmates’ clothes and polished their shoes in exchange for payment, using the earnings to help cover her brother’s school fees.

Despite her tireless efforts, she often found herself at the top of the list of students with outstanding school fees. This unfortunate circumstance led to a great deal of humiliation. Her torn and tattered uniform became a symbol of her impoverished state, and she was even falsely accused when theft occurred at school.

Overcoming humiliation and challenges

Mercy endured a miserable existence, constantly facing embarrassment and isolation. However, it was during this challenging time that she discovered her inner strength and resilience. She attributes her unwavering determination to her father’s guidance and unwavering support.

“I am proud of my dad because he taught me all I needed to know about crossing the bridge from being a child to an adult,” reflects Mercy.

The road to success was fraught with obstacles for Mercy. She experienced numerous setbacks, including failing her first attempt at the JAMB examination. Nevertheless, she didn’t let these disappointments define her. Instead, she used them as motivation to persevere and succeed.

Hawking pure water for survival

“There was a time when I stopped schooling to hawk pure water, plantain, and other things,” shares Mercy. “Do you know I was once a housemaid and also did some menial jobs for a particular artist to make ends meet? I washed her clothes and did some other things in her hometown to survive.”

Despite her humble beginnings, Mercy’s determination and resilience paid off. Today, she has risen from rags to riches, becoming an inspiration to many. Her story serves as a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and unwavering faith.
