From science student to award-winning author, Yahuza Usman’s touching unconventional writing journey
At just 17 years old, Yahuza Usman has already achieved more in the world of writing and creativity than most people do in a lifetime. The self-proclaimed Crawling Writer, Usman is a true jack-of-all-trades. From being a science student to an award-winning author, essayist, poet, and spoken word artist, Usman’s talent knows no bounds.
Usman’s journey as a writer began unexpectedly. As the Secretary General of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) forum of Umara, Jalingo Area Council, he felt the need to improve his language skills to excel in his role. Turning to English movies and spoken word pieces, he quickly learned new words and found a passion for storytelling. Under the mentorship of Mal. Safiyanu Yahuza, Usman began writing in April 2022, immersing himself in the world of words.
“I never envisioned myself traveling down this path,’ Usman admits candidly. ‘But fate, it seems, had other plans for me.”
Despite facing a lack of support and resources, Usman never gave up on his dream. He continued to write, even when it seemed there was nothing to gain from it. But in January 2023, everything changed. Usman won the On-the-spot Non-Fiction Writing prize at the 2023 Hadiza Ibrahim Aliyu Schools Festival (HIASFEST), providing him with the recognition he deserved. From that point on, his writing career took off.
A turning point in Usman’s journey was the release of his award-winning book, “Anatomy of Broken Dreams.” Filled with poems inspired by personal experiences, the book delves into themes of loss, love, and the fragility of the human heart. It became a way for Usman to express his emotions and connect with his readers on a deeper level.
”Through movies and spoken word, the universe of words opened up before me. The power of storytelling beckoned, and I answered the call,’ Usman recalled.
The road to success has not been without its challenges. Usman has faced countless difficulties, including a lack of resources and financial support. Being a voracious reader, he understands the importance of books in nurturing his craft, but buying them often comes as a sacrifice when there are other priorities to consider.
However, through it all, Usman’s parents have been his unwavering support system. They have not only encouraged his dreams but have also provided him with the means to pursue them.

Participating in multiple categories, he won two prizes, bringing him joy and a sense of fulfillment. Looking ahead, Usman’s long-term goals include continuing to write, inspiring other writers, and winning the prestigious Nigeria Prize for Literature.
”Winning the prize was an affirmation that dreams, no matter how extraordinary, can indeed be turned into reality,’ says Usman, eyes shimmering with unadulterated joy.”
At such a young age, Yahuza Usman has already made a significant impact in the literary world. With his talent, perseverance, and unwavering support, there’s no doubt that he will continue to crawl along the path of success, leaving behind an indelible mark on the creative landscape.
