From over N15k to N12k — how MultiChoice reversed DStv, Gotv prices after backlash
DStv and GOtv have now reversed their prices after facing backlash from consumers. This adjustment was reflected on Multichoice’s apps on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
The decision came in response to a previous court judgment mandating Multichoice to revert its prices. Despite compliance, Multichoice argues that the ruling was unfair and has pledged to contest the decision of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja, as the company reported a significant decline in its Nigerian subscriber base, resulting in the loss of over a million subscribers.
Recall that on June 7, 2024, the CCPT ruled in favour of consumers who without warning experienced a price hike on the 1st of May, 2024. The tribunal therefore, ordered that subscribers receive one month of free service, citing Multichoice’s violation of an earlier ruling that prohibited any increase in subscription prices for DStv and GOtv packages. This breach led to a fine of 150 million Naira.
