Tragedy struck in Afashio, a community in Etsako West Local Government Area, as five people have reportedly died after allegedly consuming poisoned food. The suspected culprit, identified as Aisha Suleiman, a 16-year-old girl and ex-girlfriend of one of the victims, has been arrested by police after an attempt by local youth to lynch her on October 29.

The incident, captured in a video circulating on social media since Wednesday, depicts the aftermath of the poisoning. The deceased include Emmanuel Elogie, 19, his current girlfriend Ada Samuel, 16, and three friends: Samuel Ayegwalo, Jeffrey Ayegwalo, and a young man identified as Nurudeen.

Edo State Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, detailing that officers were notified on October 26. According to Yamu, Emmanuel’s father, Elogie Ezekiel, had visited his son’s apartment early that morning and discovered the tragic scene. Upon entering, he found Nurudeen’s body in the corridor, and further inside, the bodies of his son Emmanuel and Ada Samuel were found together on a bed in the bedroom. The siblings Samuel and Jeffrey Ayegwalo were discovered in the sitting room.

The bodies were transported to the hospital, where medical personnel confirmed all five deaths.

Here’s why you should not be friends with your ex

1. Emotional Confusion and Unresolved Feelings

Remaining friends with an ex can keep old feelings alive, leading to confusion and making it difficult to fully move on. Staying in touch might bring back memories, rekindle emotions, or prevent the healing process, especially if there’s lingering attachment on either side. This may lead to unnecessary emotional strain, especially if one person has already moved on romantically.

2. Interference with New Relationships

A friendship with an ex can complicate future relationships. New partners may feel uncomfortable with the friendship, suspecting unresolved feelings or simply feeling insecure about the connection. This can create tension, trust issues, or even lead to the new partner feeling undervalued or overlooked. It’s essential to create a clear boundary to respect the comfort of new partners.

3. Tendency to Rehash Past Problems

Friendships with exes often lead to revisiting issues that led to the breakup, stirring up old arguments or resentments. These conversations can become repetitive and emotionally exhausting, hindering personal growth. Staying friends could keep both people stuck in the past, making it difficult to truly let go of what didn’t work.

4. Difficulty Establishing Healthy Boundaries

Setting boundaries with an ex is challenging, as old habits or tendencies may resurface. This can blur the line between friendship and a romantic relationship, leading to misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Over time, this lack of clarity can harm both individuals, making it hard to establish a balanced and respectful friendship.

5. Risk of Falling into a ‘Fallback’ Relationship

Sometimes, people fall back into relationships with their ex because they feel comfortable or familiar, even if the relationship wasn’t healthy. This cycle can prevent both individuals from finding new relationships that are more fulfilling and suitable. It’s essential to allow each person the space and freedom to grow independently, rather than staying connected as a safety net.
