Finland passport: How much it costs to get the travel document, cheaper option revealed

3 min read

Finnish citizens applying for a new passport in 2026 can save money by choosing the electronic application option, as the country’s authorities have introduced different charges depending on how applicants submit their requests.

Getting a Finnish passport costs €42 when citizens apply electronically, compared with €48 for applications submitted in person at a police service point.

The Finnish government announced the revised charges in December 2025. The new fees took effect on January 1, 2026, and will remain in place until December 31, 2026.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, passport application fees decreased by €7 to €9, depending on the application method. The government attributed the reduction to an expected increase in the number of applicants in 2026.

How much does a Finnish passport cost in 2026?

The Finnish Police has published different charges for standard, rapid and express passport applications.

For citizens choosing standard delivery, the fees are:

  • Electronic application: €42.
  • Application submitted in person: €48.

Applicants who need their passports sooner can also choose faster delivery services.

A passport with rapid delivery costs €61 through an electronic application and €67 when submitted in person.

For express delivery, applicants pay €81 electronically or €87 when applying in person.

This means citizens can save €6 by applying electronically, regardless of whether they choose standard, rapid or express delivery.

The fees are published on the Finnish Police’s official website.

How can Finnish citizens apply for a passport?

Finnish citizens can apply for passports through the police’s electronic service or by visiting a police service point.

The electronic option is cheaper and generally faster. However, submitting an online application does not always mean applicants can complete the entire process without visiting a police station.

According to the Finnish Police, some applicants must appear in person to establish their identity and provide fresh fingerprints.

Applicants should first have their passport photographs taken at a photography studio that can send the images electronically to the police.

They then receive a photograph retrieval code, which they attach to their applications through the online service.

After completing the application and paying the required fee, applicants can monitor its progress online.

If the system requires an identification visit, they must book an appointment at a police station.

How long is a Finnish passport valid?

A standard Finnish passport is generally valid for five years.

Citizens must ensure their personal information remains accurate and that they can still be recognised from their passport photographs.

The Finnish Police also warns that a passport becomes unusable for travel if the holder’s name or personal identity code changes but the document still carries the old information.

Children are not exempt from passport requirements. Even infants must have their own individual travel documents when travelling abroad.

Parents or guardians can submit passport applications on behalf of their minor children. However, almost all minors must visit a police station for identification.

The requirements mean that Finnish citizens must consider both the application fees and the procedures involved before arranging international travel.
