Africa Games: Here’s all to know as tournament begins in Ghana

The cities of Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast in Ghana will host the delayed 2023 African Games. From March 8 to March 23, 2024, more than 4,000 athletes from every nation on the continent will compete in 29 games in the 15-day competition.

This will be the 13th African Games and will serve as a qualification for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The longstanding continental sports festival is jointly organised by the African Union, the Association of African Sports Confederations, and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.

The African Games was formerly known as the All-African Games and it is usually hosted every four years, a year before the Olympics.

The event is created, organised and managed by Africans for African athletes.

The former Community Games and Friendship Games, which took place in Senegal in 1963, served as the inspiration for the idea behind the sporting festival.

In response to these developments, the General Assembly of African Ministers of Youth and Sports met in Dakar that year.

Egypt won the most medals at the inaugural games, which took place in July 1965 in Brazzaville, Congo, with about 2,500 athletes from 30 countries competing.

Date: 2023 African Games will take place from March 8–23, 2024.

Venues: The games will be held in the University of Ghana Stadium, the Borteyman Sports Complex, the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, the Accra Sports Stadium, and the Achimota Cricket Oval.
