In the world of music, few names shine as brightly as Wizkid, the Nigerian superstar who has taken the global music scene by storm. In recognition of his immense contributions to the music industry, Governor Mark Dayton of US State of Minnesota on 26th September, 2018 declared the 6th of October every year as the City’s Wizkid Day.

Wizkid’s Rise to Stardom



Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun on July 16, 1990, in Lagos, Nigeria, Wizkid’s journey to stardom is nothing short of remarkable. He began his musical career at the age of 11, singing in his local church choir. His talent quickly became evident, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already making waves in Nigeria’s music scene.



Wizkid’s breakthrough came in 2010 with his debut album, “Superstar.” The album featured hit tracks like “Holla at Your Boy,” “Don’t Dull,” and “Tease Me,” catapulting him to national fame. His fusion of Afrobeat, reggae, and hip-hop elements created a unique sound that resonated with audiences worldwide.

Wizkid’s music transcended borders, and he soon gained international recognition. Collaborations with international artists such as Drake, Beyoncé, and Skepta further solidified his global appeal. His 2016 collaboration with Drake on the chart-topping hit “One Dance” made him the first Nigerian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Billboard Hot 100: Wizkid’s collaboration with Drake on the hit single “One Dance” reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2016. This made him the first Nigerian artist to achieve this feat.

MOBO Awards: Wizkid has won multiple MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards, including Best African Act. He has been recognized for his consistent excellence in the Afrobeat and African music genres.

Spotify Streams: His music has garnered millions of streams on platforms like Spotify, with songs like “Essence” and “Come Closer” becoming massive hits worldwide.

Guinness World Record: On December 16, 2016, Wizkid broke a Guinness World Record as the first artist to reach one billion streams on Spotify with his track ‘One Dance.’ Wizkid’s collaboration with Drake and Kyla on ‘One Dance’ made history.

Other Awards: Wizkid holds the record for being the most awarded African artist at prestigious BET Awards (4), as well as The Headies. He has also got Soul Train Awards (3), Billboard Awards (3), iHeartRadio Music Awards (2). He is also a recipient of an ASCAP plaque for Drake’s “One Dance”.
